ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Veronica Christ's three-pointer with 4:30 to go forced Moravian into a timeout as the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team closed out the game on a 14-3 run to beat the Greyhounds 77-64 at Thompson Gymnasium Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference action. Christ, who had a game-high 23 points, was one of four players in double figures for the Blue Jays.
Summer McNulty added 15 and
Cyleigh Wilson and
DaniRae Renno each had 10 apiece.
Ahead by a basket, Christ knocked down her third three of the game to get Elizabethtown (10-2, 2-0 Landmark) a little bit of breathing room. The Greyhounds were unable to score out of the timeout and then down at the other end, a few offensive rebounds eventually led to
Jessica King's layup to push the lead to seven, 68-61, with 3:40 left. Then, as Moravian (4-10, 2-1 Landmark) remained unable to score,
Emily Prowell popped out above the three-point line on the far court, and one in motion off the pass from
Summer McNulty, delivered a pin-point perfect left-handed feed to King cutting across the middle for the easy bucket.
The Blue Jays shot 4-for-7 over the final four and a half minutes while not allowing a made field goal by the Greyhounds. Moravian's only points the last stretch came at the foul line, where they were 3-for-4 in the final minutes.
It was a back and forth game in the first quarter. Neither team led by more than three through one quarter. Wilson's three had given Etown a three-point lead, but Jackie Kelly's fastbreak and-one layup with under a minute to go tied the game at 14-14.Â
Taylor Huyck's free throws in the second quarter re-established a four-point lead not long after Renno had also given the Jays a four-point advantage in the quarter. The Greyhounds did grab a momentary lead on Emily Markowski's three, but McNulty hit a pair of foul shots with 22 seconds left in the half that sent Elizabethtown into the break ahead by one, 28-27.
The Jays were able to get Moravian's leading scorer, Kayla Yoegel into foul trouble in the first half, as she only played nine minutes. Christ and McNulty both spent time guarding Yoegel throughout the game and held her to 1-for-9 from the floor and five points in the game.
As they have done all season, Elizabethtown owned the third quarter once again. They outscored Moravian 29-22 and took an eight-point lead into the fourth. Etown did a good job of getting points in the paint through King and Renno early on. McNulty and Wilson hit from deep as the lead slowly grew to near double-digits. The Greyhounds got within five with 1:37 to go in the third, but
Cassandra Peris's jumper sent it right back to seven.
Moravian did fight back over the first portion of the fourth and Yoegel's free throws gave the visitors a one-point lead, 60-59, but the Blue Jays would take over from that point. Christ came right back with two of her 23 that put Etown back in front and that's where they stayed.
Elizabethtown will head to Drew on Monday, January 17, at 4 p.m. for their rescheduled game with the Rangers in Madison, N.J.
