Freshmen play major role in Blue Jays' win at Drew

MADISON, N.J. -- Summer McNulty had a team-high 19 points and DaniRae Renno recorded her fourth double-double of the season as the freshmen played a major role in the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's big road win at Drew on Monday. The Blue Jays finished the game on an 11-3 run to pull away from the Rangers for the 70-59 win to keep them unbeaten in Landmark play. Veronica Christ added 16 points for Etown.

In similar fashion to Saturday's win over Moravian at Thompson Gymnasium, a Christ three started a run out of a timeout, only this time it was Drew's (10-2, 1-2 Landmark) timeout after Brooke Timiniski made it a three-point game, 59-56, with two and a half minutes to go. Christ hit back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive possessions that turned the three-point lead into a nine-point cushion. She then made it eight consecutive points for Elizabethtown (11-2, 3-0 Landmark) as the lead grew to double digits.

The Rangers were unable to recover from it as Joey Meyers had three of her game-high 23 points during the run, but it was too little, too late for Drew. McNulty put the finishing touches on the game with some free throws in the waning moments. She led Etown with her 19 points, the sixth time in the last seven games she's scored 10 or more points.

In the early going, the Blue Jays were able to establish Renno down low. The first-year forward had 10 points in the first half as Drew struggled with Renno's size in the post area.

After leading by a pair at the end of the first, the second quarter proved to be Etown's best of the night. The Rangers were within one, but six straight points provided by Renno, Christ, and Taylor Huyck helped get the lead up to seven with a little over half the period still to play. Kyra Mann knocked down a three for Drew, but McNulty and Christ responded with consecutive baskets to return the lead back up to eight, 29-21, with 3:35 to go before the half.

Meyers helped trim the deficit back down to three with a little over a minute left in the first half, but the final six points belonged to the Jays. McNulty fed Renno for two in the paint, then after a Drew miss, McNulty collected the rebound and sent Cyleigh Wilson out on the transition opportunity. Wilson's driving layup was good and McNulty ended the half with a bucket of her own with seven ticks left. Elizabethtown led 37-28 at the break.

Road wins aren't easy to come by in the conference, and the Rangers didn't make it easy on the Blue Jays. Drew was within two possessions for much of the third quarter after an early run cut their deficit down to four. Late in the third, Renno knocked down to free throws and Cassandra Peris's driving, left-handed layup was good to push it back to eight. A Meyers and-one made it a five-point game, but Christ found her freshman post down low for another two in the paint and Etown led 51-44 going into the fourth.

Made baskets from Lindsay Boyd and McNulty early in the fourth were the only ones for the Jays in nearly five minutes of game action. Drew slowly worked its way back into it as they held Elizabethtown scoreless. Meyers' layup made things interesting at 55-52, but who else but McNulty to break the scoring drought for EC with her floater in the lane.

It was after Renno's layup that Timinski cut it to three points with her pull-up jumper from the left elbow. Drew called a full timeout with the score sitting at 59-56. That's when Christ made sure enough was enough and rattled off eight straight for Etown to put the Rangers in the rearview mirror for good.

Elizabethtown dominated the boards with a 47-33 (+14) advantage on the glass, including 22 offensive rebounds to just nine for Drew. The Blue Jays also led in several other areas like fastbreak points (19-5), points in the paint (44-38), and points off turnovers (18-13). Etown committed just 12 turnovers, its second fewest total of the season and lowest total on the road so far this season.

Renno's 16 points and 12 rebounds were her fourth double-double of the season. Christ's surge in the final minutes of the fourth to get her to 16 points meant she's reached double figures in all 13 games this season. McNulty hit double digits for the sixth time in her last seven games and added seven boards and team-highs in assists (6) and steals (3). Emily Prowell, who got the start tonight, tied a season-best with 10 rebounds.

The women's basketball team will head to Goucher on Wednesday, January 19, at 7 p.m.
