ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Veronica Christ and
Summer McNulty had a combined 43 points for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team in their 74-61 win over Drew on Senior Day. Christ had a game-high 24 points while McNulty pumped in 19 of her own in the Blue Jays' win.
Elizabethtown (14-3, 6-1 Landmark) won the tip and immediately went down and scored as
Cyleigh Wilson found
DaniRae Renno for the layup to get the Jays out right away. Next time down, Christ sank her first shot of the night, knocking in the jumper to make it 4-0 in the first minute of action.
The next nine points for the Blue Jays belonged to McNulty as the freshman shot 4 for 6 in the first quarter. Her jumper off a feed from
Cassandra Peris with 2:36 left gave Etown a 13-11 lead. Wilson drained a three as time expired in the first to send EC into the second quarter with an 18-14 lead.
Christ took over the second with 15 of her 24 points coming in the 10 minutes before halftime. Drew (12-4, 3-4 Landmark) cut their deficit in half with Cecelia Kracht's layup, but the Pittstown, N.J. native answered immediately with a three.
Emily Prowell found her teammate for the trey to push the lead back to five. Christ then got inside on Etown's next possession and knocked down the jumper to extend it to seven, 23-16.
The Rangers didn't go away as they kept going inside to the post. Frederick finished around the basket to the tune of 14 first-half points for Drew on 7-for-12 shooting. Her layup with 6:31 left in the second gave the Rangers their first lead at 25-23.
Christ's hot hand kept Elizabethtown going. Prowell found her for a layup to tie the game back up and then Christ's third three of the first half put Etown back up by three. After Drew retook the lead, Wilson brought it right back to the Jays' favor with a trey of her own with 2:46 to go in the second. Christ followed with another to make it a five-point game, 36-31.
Elizabethtown led 38-33 at the half. Christ and McNulty both hit double digits for the Blue Jays in the first half.
The scoring was a bit more spread out in the third for EC as they were an efficient 7 of 12 from the field with five players knocking down at least one shot and six players contributing to the team's 16 points in the quarter. Renno and Christ had the first two baskets of the third as Elizabethtown led 42-33. A quick 5-0 spurt from the Rangers brought it back down to four at 42-38 after consecutive turnovers by Etown.
Later in the third,
Taylor Huyck drained a three from the left wing, her lone make of the game, to make it 51-44. Sekya Campbell finished the quarter with a buzzer-beating layup and the Rangers were down only six going into the final quarter.
Drew started the fourth on a 7-0 run, completed by Campbell's three-point play with 7:35 left in regulation. That gave the Rangers a 55-54 lead.
McNulty drilled a big three from the left side and got hit in the process. Her four-point play put Etown right back in front with 6:18 to go. The three, one of 10 in the game for Elizabethtown started off the Jays' 20-6 run to finish out the game. Christ knocked down another three on the next possession to make it 61-55, forcing Coach John Olenowski into a full timeout.
King had seven points for the Blue Jays during the run, with six coming from McNulty, three from Christ and Wilson, and
Clare Marchese split a pair of free throws in the final minute. Etown held Drew to 3-for-12 shooting after Campbell's three-point play.
Christ and McNulty combined to shoot 18-for-32 on the night and 6-for-9 from three-point range. King and Prowell each hauled down eight rebounds apiece. Christ and Prowell both recorded five assists while King led the team defensively with five steals and three blocked shots.
Elizabethtown will head to the nation's capital on Monday, January 31, to face Catholic at 7 p.m.
