WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A late three in the fourth helped #18 Catholic force overtime, but the OT period belonged to the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team, who outscored the nationally-ranked Cardinals 13-4 on their own court to pull off the upset 72-63 on Monday.
Summer McNulty led all scorers with 21Â points while
DaniRae Renno added 16 and eight rebounds in the win.
Elizabethtown (15-3, 7-1 Landmark) got off to fantastic start, hitting 50 percent from the floor in the opening quarter. Renno posted eight first-quarter points for the Blue Jays, who got out to a 21-15 lead heading into the second.
Though Catholic (15-2, 6-2 Landmark) outscored Etown 15-14 in the second, the Jays still took the lead into halftime, 35-30.
The third quarter belonged to McNulty, who recorded 11 of her 21 points on 5-for-9 shooting.
Emily Prowell knocked down a pair of free throws in the third along with a left-handed layup, assisted by McNulty. Prowell assisted on Christ's three-point play in the quarter. Elizabethtown led 53-46 after three quarters.
Turnovers hurt the Blue Jays in the fourth as they finished the quarter with more giveaways than points. Etown struggled from the floor, shooting just 2-for-9, with makes from
Cyleigh Wilson and
Taylor Huyck. The Cardinals, meanwhile, shot 43 percent to get back into the game.
With only three seconds to go, and even though it was Catholic's worst three-point shooting performance of the season, Carly Mulvaney was able to hit a three from the left corner that wound up forcing the overtime. CATHU outscored the Jays 13-6 in the fourth as the game went into OT tied 59-59.
The script flipped, however, in the overtime as Catholic struggled from the field. Elizabethtown was perfect from the floor, hitting all three attempts. The Blue Jays tacked on seven of their 13 overtime points at the foul line as Christ, King, Renno, and McNulty added free throws to Etown's total.
As the Cardinals couldn't hit, EC was able to bleed clock and forced Catholic into fouling down the stretch and eventually sending the Jays to the line as they inevitably put the game away from the free throw stripe.
It was McNulty's third game of the season with 20 or more points. Renno was in double figures for the ninth time in her last 11 games. Christ, who had 11 on the night, hit double digits for the 18th consecutive game.
The women's basketball team hosts Goucher on Wednesday, February 2, at 7 p.m.
