Four hit double figures as women's basketball downs Juniata

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Four players reached double figures for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Wednesday night in a 76-48 win over Juniata at Thompson Gymnasium. Veronica Christ led the way with a game-high 20 points. DaniRae Renno, Jessica King, and Taylor Huyck also hit double digits for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown (13-3, 5-1 Landmark) opened up a 15-point lead after the first quarter by shooting nearly 60 percent in the first 10 minutes. Christ shot 4-for-8 to pace the Blue Jays with nine in the first. Etown held Juniata (5-12, 1-6 Landmark) to 10 points on 4-for-14 shooting (28.6 percent).

The Jays didn't allow a made field goal from the Eagles for nearly five minutes of game action in the first as they cranked the lead up to 19 after Emily Prowell's layup. King had her eyes down low as Prowell sealed her defender off and the sophomores connected for the bucket in the paint. Juniata managed the final four points of the first to get back to within 15, 25-10.

The Eagles were able to settle in and shoot better from the floor in the second quarter, but the Jays were still hitting at a 50 percent clip and took a 17-point lead into the half, 45-28. Christ had 12 first-half points while King and Renno each contributed nine.

Elizabethtown held Juniata to 10 points in each of the third and fourth quarters and didn't let the Eagles hit from deep. Juniata has averaged nearly 24 attempts from beyond the arc, but only attempted 13 on the night as the Blue Jays' length was a factor in slowing down the perimeter game of JC.

Etown was also solid from the free throw line, hitting 13 of their 16 attempts. The Eagles were just 5-for-10.

The women's basketball team will host Drew on Saturday, January 29, at 4 p.m. Saturday's game also serves as Senior Day for the Blue Jays.
