Scranton overtakes women's basketball in fourth quarter to snap win streak

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team held the lead in the fourth quarter at Scranton, but the Royals were able to overtake the Blue Jays down the stretch and get past Etown 75-70 to snap the Jays' six-game win streak while also handing them their first Landmark Conference loss of the season Saturday at the John Long Center. Veronica Christ led the team with 23 points.

Scranton (15-2, 6-0 Landmark) had an early lead in the third quarter after they trailed Elizabethtown (12-3, 4-1 Landmark) by a point at halftime. The lead didn't last long as Jessica King grabbed one of her season-high 15 rebounds on an Etown miss and put it back up and in to restore the lead back to the Blue Jays. A Royals' turnover led to Christ's jumper and Summer McNulty followed that up with a three-pointer as the lead grew to six, 43-37.

DaniRae Renno pushed the lead up to as many as 11 in the third after two makes at the foul line. Christ twice kept the lead there with free throws of her own and then a jumper in transition. Scranton was able to knock down two threes in the final 1:33 as they trailed by seven heading into the fourth.

The teams traded baskets to start the fourth as McNulty and Lindsay Boyd hit consecutive layups for the Blue Jays. Another three helped get the Royals within three, but McNulty and Christ answered for Etown. Christ's jumper, two of her team-high 23, made it a 68-61 game with 6:29 left to go.

Scranton would halt the scoring for Elizabethtown as they finished the game on a 14-2 run. That seven-point deficit turned into a five-point victory for the Royals, who stayed unbeaten in conference play.

McNulty supplied 20 points along with Christ's 23. King added 12 points and 15 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Bridget Monaghan and Abby Anderson each had 21 for Scranton.

The Blue Jays will host Juniata on Wednesday, January 26, at 7 p.m.
