SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College baseball team dropped its first Landmark Conference series of the season, falling to Susquehanna, 11-10 and 11-6, Monday afternoon.
With the two losses, the Blue Jays fall to 5-5 overall and in league play, while the River Hawks improve to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the Landmark.
Etown was led by senior
Andrew Fisher who finished the afternoon 5-9 with three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore
Zach Silfies saw his first action in the field, going 4-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Junior
Joey Thomas, sophomore
Ben Watson, and freshman
AJ Bednar each finished the afternoon with three RBI.
GAME ONE: SUSQUEHANNA 11 ELIZABETHTOWN 10 (8)
In game one of the doubleheader, the Blue Jays went to extra innings for the first time against Susquehanna. Entering the eighth inning tied at six, Etown quickly loaded the bases with one out as Bednar came to the plate. The first year worked a walk, bringing home freshman Garret Schwartzbeck and keeping the bases loaded.
After
JT Thompson pushed the lead to 8-6, grounding out to the pitcher and plating junior
Tyler McGonigle, Thomas singled through the right side, scoring both Bednar and Fisher. Susquehanna secured the final out in the next at-bat, but the Blue Jays took a 10-6 lead to the bottom of the inning.
The River Hawks began to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with no outs. After Etown forced sophomore JP Yore to pop out to second, senior Steve Lorenz singled to left field, scoring senior Peter Yarem, making the score 10-7.
The Blue Jays managed the second out of the inning in the next at-bat, but not before Susquehanna cut the advantage to two (10-8) on a fielder's choice by graduate student Anthony Dombrowski.
The River Hawks tied the game at 10 as junior Adam Schreck knocked a single up the middle, scoring Dombrowski and Yarem.
Sophomore Jared Forscht replaced Schreck as a pinch-runner and immediately stole second and third. The second-year infielder then took advantage of a wild pitch to score the winning run, giving the River Hawks their third conference win of the season.

Ben Watson (0-1) took the loss for Etown, allowing five runs on three hits while walking four in 2 2/3 innings of work. Classmate
Nicholas Ortega started for the Blue Jays, striking out three while allowing four earned runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Junior Dillan Weikel (1-1) earned the win in relief for Susquehanna, giving up four runs on four hits, striking out one.
GAME TWO: SUSQUEHANNA 11 ELIZABETHTOWN 6
Down 2-0 after, Etown immediately answered in the top of the second starting with an RBI single by Fisher, plating Watson and keeping the bases loaded with McGonigle and Silfies on second and third with one out.
The Blue Jays tied the game in the next at-bat, as Bednar worked a bases-loaded walk, scoring Silfies and knotting the game at two.
A pitching change by Susquehanna did not stop the rally by Etown when Thompson hit an RBI single up the middle, bringing McGonigle around to score, giving the Blue Jays their first lead of the game, 3-2.
Etown pushed its advantage to two (4-2) as Thomas grounded out to second, but not before Fisher scampered home for the Blue Jays' fourth run of the game.
After the River Hawks went back on top 5-4 in the bottom of the third, Elizabethtown tied the game in the top of the fifth. With two outs and runners on first and third, Fisher singled through the left side, plating Fisher and giving the senior his third RBI of the day.
Susquehanna however used six runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 11-5 and rode that advantage to the series sweep of the Blue Jays, 11-6.
Senior
Tyler Dunbar (0-1) took the loss in game two, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits, striking out a season-high eight batters.
Freshman Adam Stuck (1-1) tallied his first win of the season for the River Hawks, scattering two hits over 2 2/3 innings of work while giving up zero runs.
