ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Kaitlyn Witmer homered and each of the four seniors had a hit in game one for the Elizabethtown College softball team in Sunday's doubleheader with Catholic. A late rally assisted the Cardinals in a 5-3 game one win in eight innings before shutting out the Blue Jays 10-0 in five innings in game two to get the sweep at The Nest.
Game 1: Catholic 5, Elizabethtown 3 (F/8)
Elizabethtown (3-17, 3-17 Landmark) trailed after the second inning, but
Amelia Lark tied the game up in the third for the Jays with an RBI single up the middle to score
Brinley Schmidt. A batter later, with a swing of Witmer's bat, Etown was in front by two as the senior launched a towering shot over the left field fence.
Starter
Paige Phillips held Catholic (11-3, 11-3 Landmark) scoreless over the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. She had some help on defense in that span.
Grace Hussey made a diving catch in foul territory for an out in the fourth and
Lindsey Fasolo completed a double play earlier on a lineout and doubled up the runner at second base.
The Cardinals rallied in the seventh to tie the game and sent it to extras. Juliet Lodes and Allie Lajeunesse each had RBI doubles in the extra frame and gave CATHU a 5-3 lead. Lajeunesse retired the side in order to earn her fourth win of the season and give Catholic the game one victory.
Game 2: Catholic 10, Elizabethtown 0 (F/5)
Catholic jumped ahead 4-0 in the first on the back of a three-run homer from Lodes and never looked back. The Cardinals added five runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Justina Benvenuto threw five innings, giving up four hits to Etown. Schmidt had a pair of base hits in game two for the Jays. Lark and Witmer also recorded hits.
