ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Paige Phillips threw a complete game shutout for the Elizabethtown College softball team in game two to help the Blue Jays split with Catholic on Saturday. The Cardinals won game one in five innings, 13-5, before Phillips' gem in game two allowed Etown a 1-0 victory. The junior also had the game-winning RBI.
Game 1: Catholic 13, Elizabethtown 5 (F/5)
Brinley Schmidt and
Amelia Lark both had RBIs for Elizabethtown (3-15, 3-15 Landmark) in the third inning to cut a 3-0 deficit down to 3-2. A big fourth inning for Catholic after a run in the third made it 12-2 heading to the fifth.
Kaitlyn Witmer drove in a pair of runs in teh fifth as
Grace Hussey and Schmidt scored on the senior's single to right field. Phillips singled through the left side in the inning to score Lark, but the Cardinals were able to end it in five.
Game 2: Elizabethtown 1, Catholic 0
Catholic (9-3, 9-3 Landmark) had a runner at third in the bottom of the first of game two, but Phillips worked her way out without giving up the run. She put the Cardinals down in order in each of the next three innings before Catholic had back-to-back singles in the fifth.
Phillips faced another threat as they had a runner in scoring position with only one out, but a pop out and a strike out ended that and the game went to the sixth still scoreless.
Once again, Catholic had an opportunity to take the lead in the sixth with a runner at third. Once again, Phillips did not allow the run to score, inducing an inning ending ground out to short.
In the seventh, with one out, Witmer singled down the left field line to put one on for Elizabethtown. Phillips followed by drilling a double into the outfield that was enough to allow Witmer to score from first.
The Cardinals got a runner on in the bottom of the seventh, needing a run to tie and two to win. Phillips got the second out of the inning on a fly out to Schmidt in right. Catholic took the risk on a 1-0 count as the runner at first made a move toward second. Mistichelli took the pitch from Phillips and delivered a perfect throw to
Courtney Fitzsimons, who covered second on the steal attempt. The throw beat the runner to the bag, Fitzsimons applied the tag, and the Blue Jays walked away with the 1-0 win to earn the split.
Lark, Witmer, and Phillips each had a hit in the game. Phillips struck out two over seven innings in the complete game shutout victory.
Elizabethtown will host Catholic tomorrow, April 18, for a doubleheader at The Nest. First pitch is at 1 p.m. For the Elizabethtown College Spectator Policy, pleaseÂ
