ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team had an afternoon of firsts, as the Blue Jays upset No. 8 Juniata in the opening match off the day before falling to the Eagles in the second on senior day.
The victory is not only the first win for Etown over Juniata but the first win over a ranked opponent in program history.
The Blue Jays (1-3, 1-3) were led by sophomore
Steve Swain who finished the afternoon with 23 kills. Sophomores
Tony Camillo and
Cheston Jacobs controlled the middle, as Camillo hit a combined .438 with 14 kills, while Jacobs tallied a .524 hitting percentage and 13 kills. Graduate student
Matt Schaeffer tallied 56 assists between the two matches. Senior
Joey Nelson registered his 400
th career kill in the opening match, becoming the first player in program history to reach this milestone.
Before the start of the opening match, Nelson and Schaeffer were both honored in a senior day celebration.
The Eagles (8-2, 3-1) were led by junior middle Kevin Duffy who finished the day with 34 kills. Duffy highlighted the second match, tallying 18 kills and hitting .708.
ELIZABETHTOWN 3, No. 8 JUNIATA 2 (25-21, 16-25, 12-25, 25-20, 16-14)
- SET ONE: Tied at 13 midway through the opening set, Etown rattled off five straight points capped off by an ace by Swain for the 18-13 lead. Juniata climbed back into the first stanza and actually moved ahead by two (20-18) after a kill by Duffy. The Blue Jays snatched back control, scoring seven of the final eight points of the first, as freshman Nick Chapman found Camillo for the final kill and the early advantage, 25-21.
- SET TWO: The Eagles controlled the second set from the jump, taking the lead 4-3 and never looking back. Juniata pushed its advantage to eight (18-10) after back-to-back aces by junior Robert Bowling and then scored the final two points of the second, tying the match at one with the 25-16 win.
- SET THREE: The momentum stayed with the Eagles in the third set as Juniata raced out to a 20-11 lead. Etown had no answers in the third and the Eagles hit .522 as a squad, moving ahead 2-1 with the 25-12 victory.
- SET FOUR: The Blue Jays hit the comeback trail in the fourth swapping the lead with Juniata all the way to 15 all. Etown used a 5-1 rally to distance itself from the Eagles and snatch a four-point advantage (20-16). Sophomore Blake Hildebrand and Chapman capped off this run with consecutive kills. Juniata moved back within three (22-19) but this as close as they would get and the Blue Jays forced a fifth and final set with a 25-20 win in the fourth.
- SET FIVE: Holding a 14-10 advantage in the fifth, it looked like the Eagles were going to take the opening match of the day. Etown, however, erupted for the final five points of the last stanza led by solid defense and two kills from Camillo, including the match-winner, 16-14.
No. 8 JUNIATA 3, ELIZABETHTOWN 0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-16)
- SET ONE: Down six (13-7) midway through the first set, the Blue Jays went on a quick 4-1 run to move back within three at 14-11. Etown closed back within two twice at 18-16 and 19-17 but was unable to close the gap anymore, dropping the opening set 25-19.
- SET TWO: Juniata once again moved out to an advantage in the second, taking a 14-11 lead after a service error by the Blue Jays. Etown took back the momentum, knotting things at 14 after kills from Hildebrand and Camillo. It continued to be a battle to the finish with the score being tied nine different times all the way to 25-25. The Eagles closed it out, however, grabbing the 2-0 advantage with a 27-25 win.
- SET THREE: Juniata carried the momentum into the final set and salvaged a split on the day. With the score knotted at 10, the Eagles broke things open with a 15-6 run, ending the second match and earn the straight-set victory.
