ARLINGTON, Va. The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team dropped its first two road games of the season, falling to Marymount 3-0 and 3-1 Saturday afternoon
The Blue Jays (1-5, 1-5) were led by sophomore
Blake Hildebrand who tallied 15 kills and 21 digs between the two matches. He secured his first double-double of the year in the second match of the day, tallying 10 kills and 11 digs. Freshman
Nick Chapman had 17 kills, including a career-high 12 in the first match, and graduate student
Matt Schaeffer 59 total assists on the afternoon.
MARYMOUNT 3, ELIZABETHTOWN 0 (25-27, 11-25, 20-25)
- SET ONE: Down 15-10 midway through the opening set, Etown used a 6-0 run to move ahead by one (16-15). The rally was highlighted by two aces from Hildebrand and a kill by Chapman. The score remained close and saw it tied seven different times all the way to 25-25 after a kill by sophomore Steve Swain. The Saints, however scored the final two points of the first set for the 27-25 victory.
- SET TWO: It was all Marymount in the second set as the home team ran out to an 11-5 lead. The Blue Jays were unable to find their groove and the Saints rolled to a 2-0 advantage, 25-11.
- SET THREE: Marymount continued to hold onto the momentum in the final set of match one, jumping out to an 11-2 lead. Elizabethtown closed the gap to six at 14-8 after back-to-back attacker errors by the home team. The Saints continued to keep the Blue Jays at arm's length, but Etown found one last spurt late in the third. Facing match point (24-17) the Blue Jays rattled off three straight points capped off by a kill from Hildebrand. Marymount, however, closed out the first match, 25-20, for the 3-0 win.
MARYMOUNT 3, ELIZABETHTOWN 1 (25-18, 25-13, 26-28, 25-21)
- SET ONE: Down eight (16-8) midway through the first, Etown mounted a comeback with a 6-2 rally to bring the score to 18-14. Four is as close as the Blue Jays would get though as Marymount moved out to a 1-0 lead for the second straight match, 25-18.
- SET TWO: After a kill by sophomore Tony Camillo made the score 10-8 in favor of the home team, the Saints used a quick 4-0 run to move ahead by six (14-8). Marymount used this spurt to snatch back the momentum in the second set and took a 2-0 lead with a 25-13 win.
- SET THREE: Elizabethtown found a spark in the third set, moving out to an early 9-7 lead after an ace by Hildebrand. Swain pushed the Blue Jays lead to four (14-10) before Marymount rattled off three quick points to move back within one (14-13). Etown responded, pushing its advantage to five (18-13) with a 4-0 run highlighted by a block by Camillo and Chapman. The Saints managed a comeback and tied the scored at 25 before the Blue Jays secured the third set victory with the final three points for a final score of 28-26.
- SET FOUR: Once again Etown took an early lead in the fourth set, capitalizing on a kill from Swain for the one-point advantage (12-11). The two teams continued to battle and found themselves at 18-18. Tying the score one last time at 19, the Saints finished of the day with a 6-2 run and the 25-21 victory to close out match two.

Elizabethtown wraps up its 2021 slate of games on Tuesday, March 23, as they travel to Huntingdon, Pa. for two against No. 9 Juniata. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
