ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In order to secure their first Landmark win of the season, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team needed some of their players to step up against Susquehanna on Saturday at Thompson Gymnasium.
Summer McNulty,
Jessica King,
Cyleigh Wilson, and
Emily Prowell did just that for the Blue Jays as they held off the River Hawks, 71-65. McNulty had a season-high 19 in the win.
After a three-minute back and forth in the first quarter, Wilson's three put Elizabethtown (6-1, 1-0 Landmark) ahead 13-11 and the Blue Jays did not trail the rest of the half. Christ and King led Etown with 10 points each in the first half while McNulty was 7-for-8 from the foul line.
In the middle of the second quarter, foul trouble hit the Jays as Christ had to sit with three charged to her and 5:18 left in the second. Up 15 at the time, Susquehanna (5-2, 0-1 Landmark) chipped away at the deficit and after Erin McQuillen's three-pointer with 1:51 to go in the half, the River Hawks trailed by only four, 38-34. McNulty broke Etown's scoreless drought with a pair at the line and the Jays went into the half ahead by four. McQuillen hit a late bucket for two of her game-high 13 in the first half.
King, as she did throughout the entire game, was big on the boards, getting her own miss to open the third and putting it back up and in, two of her season-high 12 points. Her 13 rebounds were also a season-high, the third time she's grabbed at least 10 boards in a game and her second double-double of the season.
DaniRae Renno put back her own miss and then next time down the floor, Wilson dropped in her second three of the game to extend the lead up to 9, 47-38. McQuillen was able to answer for the River Hawks from distance. Susquehanna, who normally averages above 25 attempts from deep, was held to just 17 attempts from beyond the arc, connecting on six of them.
Later in the quarter, McQuillen went on a seven-point spurt of her own to bring the River Hawks back from being down nine to ahead by two after her pull up jumper with 4:08 to go in the third. McNulty leveled the game two possessions later on a jumper of her own. Prowell's three-point play with 16 seconds left gave Elizabethtown a three-point edge heading into the fourth after the sophomore grabbed the miss off a layup attempt and was fouled in the act of putting the shot back up. Count the basket and the make at the line, three of Prowell's eight off the bench.
McNulty found Christ for the layup near midway through the fourth that gave the Blue Jays a six-point lead, but Susquehanna wouldn't go away. McQuillen's jumper with five and a half to go cut it back to a two-point game. Later, it was down to one on her basket with 3:08 left.
Christ hit back-to-back jumpers on consecutive possessions to provide the Blue Jays with a little bit of breathing room, making it a two-possession game at 67-62. Then, out of a timeout, McQuillen's shot was no good as Christ blocked the senior's layup attempt. Off went McNulty to the other end, fouled on the transition attempt and knocked down a pair at the line to make it a seven-point game.
A three by the River Hawks with a minute left brought it back down to four, but Wilson sealed it off with two free throws with four seconds showing and the Blue Jays held off the River Hawks for the 71-65 win.
McNulty had a team-high 19 points, including 13-for-14 at the foul line. Christ added 16 and tied a career-high with four blocks. King's 12 and 13 were huge while Prowell's eight and 10 were crucial as well.
The Blue Jays will travel to King's (Pa.) on Tuesday, December 14, for the Sandy Hook Memorial Game.
