Blue Jays stage fourth quarter comeback only to fall in OT at King's (Pa.)

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team trailed by 10 points entering the fourth quarter only to outscore King's (Pa.) by 10 and force overtime. The Monarchs needed a comeback of their own in the overtime period as a late three propelled King's (Pa.) to an 88-85 win over Etown at Scandlon Gymnasium. Veronica Christ, DaniRae Renno, and Summer McNulty each scored at least 20 in the game for Elizabethtown.

King's (5-3) led 43-32 at halftime after taking a 29-20 lead following the first quarter. Christ accounted for over half of Elizabethtown's (6-2) first-half points with 18 (8-14 FG) to pace the Blue Jays. McNulty added six first-half points.

Etown worked its way back into the contest by feeding Renno down in the post as the Monarch defenders had trouble with the six-foot-two forward. All 27 of Renno's points came in the second half and overtime as she shot 12-for-15 over the final 25 minutes of play. She also grabbed 11 boards to record her third double-double of the season.

King's used the deep ball to fuel the offense, hitting 14 in the game, eight in the first half to help get the Monarchs out to the double-digit lead. Emily Morano had a game-high 37 points, including six treys. Samantha Rajza dropped 19 for King's.

Some missed free throws hurt the Blue Jays in overtime after they had regained the lead late. Then, with time ticking down, King's knocked down the 14th, and all-important three-pointer, of the night, to jump back in front. They were able to hold off Etown, who couldn't convert at the other end as time expired.

Christ finished a rebound and an assist shy of a triple-double. She ended the night with 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists. Renno's 27 were a season-high as was McNulty's 20 points on an efficient 7-for-12 from the floor. She also had 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Elizabethtown will finish out 2021 at Roanoke for a two-day tournament, facing the host Maroons on Wednesday, December 29.
