SALEM, Va. -- Cyleigh Wilson hit three late three-points over a 58-second span late in the fourth quarter to put the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team ahead by three with 7.8 seconds remaining. Then, on the final play of the game,
Summer McNulty blocked the game-tying three-point attempt and time ran out as the Blue Jays dealt Lynchburg a 79-76 loss to make it a 2-0 trip for Etown at the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic.
Veronica Christ led all scorers with a career-high 29 points.
Christ had the hot hand for Elizabethtown (8-2) in the first half, going for 19 of her 29 and hitting all five of her treys. McNulty had seven and
Jessica King and
DaniRae Renno combined for 10 points in the post. The Blue Jays also knocked down seven of their season-high 11 three-pointers in the first two quarters.
Olivia Harris was the spark plug for Lynchburg (6-5) as she put up 14 first-half points on 5-for-9 shooting.
Etown had a nine-point lead midway through the second quarter after
Jillian Nagy's three, but the Hornets worked their way back within three by the end of the second quarter and trailed 39-36 at the half.
The game remained close through the third quarter as no more than a two-possession game. Elizabethtown got ahead by as many as six after Renno collected her own miss and went right back up for the bucket to make it 44-38.
It was a two-point game going into the fourth with Elizabethtown ahead 57-55. A few minutes into the final period, Lynchburg jumped back in front for the first time since the first quarter.
Down three, Renno got the Blue Jays level again after grabbing another offensive rebound and getting the put-back. That came after she split a pair at the line.
Harris got the Hornets going again and Erin Green pushed Lynchburg's lead to a game-high seven points with 3:24 left in regulation. Elizabethtown didn't back down as Christ brought her squad back within a bucket.
Emily Prowell helped keep it at two as the two teams traded baskets with a little over two minutes to go.
Then, as the Blue Jays found themselves down by four with just over a minute to go, Wilson took over. The Sandy Hook, Conn. native drained her second three of the night with 1:04 left. McNulty grabbed a defensive board on Lynchburg's miss and then Christ found Wilson for another three to push Etown back in front by two, 76-74, with 31 seconds remaining.
Lizzie Davis knocked down a jumper out of a timeout to tie the game with 24 ticks to go. Elizabethtown brought the ball down the court and Wilson found herself along on the right wing with an open look at the basket. She didn't hesistant, released the shot, and drained the trey with 7.8 seconds showing on the clock to make it a 79-76 game.
Lynchburg called timeout to advance the ball, and on the set, the ball made its way to Harris. McNulty didn't provide her any space to get off a clean look as her attempt well beyond the three-point line was blocked by the freshman and the scramble for the ball allowed time to run out and give Elizabethtown the victory.
Christ ended the night 11-for-22 from the field, including 5-for-9 from deep. All four of Wilson's makes were from beyond the arc as she finished with 12. McNulty added 13 and 7 rebounds while Renno had 12 points and 7 rebounds. King had a team-high 8 boards.
Elizabethtown will host Stevenson in their first contest of 2022 on Monday, January 3, at 7 p.m.
