YORK, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team saw a 19-point third quarter lead slip away and eventually lost 74-70 to York (Pa.) in overtime for their first loss of the season.
Veronica Christ led the Jays with 21 points while
Cyleigh Wilson poured in 20 points.
Jessica King added a double-double.
Christ,
Summer McNulty, and King got Elizabethtown (5-1) out to a 6-2 lead in the first couple of minutes, but the Spartans were right back in it on back-to-back threes from Alana Bortner. Her third trey in the first three and a half minutes forced a timeout by the Blue Jays.
A 7-2 run from Etown got them back within two after one of Wilson's season-high six threes. The Spartans led going into the second, 22-20.
Christ's three-pointer with 6:05 left in the second quarter put Elizabethtown back into the lead, where they stayed for the rest of the half. They led 34-31 at halftime, paced by Christ's team-high 11 first-half points. Wilson, McNulty, and King each had six.
The Blue Jays were flying out of the locker room, taking that three-point lead and quickly turned it into a double digit lead after Christ's layup on McNulty's feed. Moments later, a Christ steal led to a Wilson layup and York called a 30-second timeout, down 43-31 with 6:59 left in the third.
The Spartans nearly took half the quarter to get their first points, which came after
Emily Prowell's jumper made it 45-31. Savannah Wilson's layup broke the near five-minute scoring drought. Later in the quarter, Wilson caused a turnover and then drained another three for Etown as the lead got up to 19, 52-33, with 3:16 remaining in the third.
YCP was able to cut it down to 11 by the end of the third and then outscored Elizabethtown 16-5 in the fourth to force overtime after the teams were tied 60-60 at the end of regulation.
The Spartans were 24-for-28 from the free throw line in the second half and overtime as they were able to get the Jays into foul trouble and score with the clock stopped, despite shooting poorly from the floor.
York went on to outscore the Blue Jays 14-10 in OT to hand Etown their first loss with the 74-70 win. The Spartans finished the night 29-of-34 from the free throw line. The Jays were 8-for-14.
Christ had a game-high 21 points with 8 rebounds. Wilson added 20 on 7-for-13 from the field and 6-for-10 from the beyond the arc. King's double-double consisted of 11 points and 11 boards. McNulty had eight points and nine rebounds.
Elizabethtown will host Susquehanna to begin Landmark Conference play on Saturday, December 4, at 4 p.m.
