ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team shot a season-low from the floor Tuesday night against visiting Lebanon Valley, but were still able to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive with a hard-fought 57-48 win over the Dutchmen at Thompson Gymnasium.
Veronica Christ led the Blue Jays with 17 points while
Cyleigh Wilson added 10 for Etown in the win.
Elizabethtown (5-0) got off to a fast start in the first, as they shot nearly 50 percent from the field, hitting nine of their 19 attempts in the opening quarter to take a 21-13 advantage into the second. Christ accounted for 11 of the team's points in the quarter, nearly outscoring Lebanon Valley (4-3) on her own.
The second quarter was not as kind, as Etown fell into a shooting slump, making just two of 12 from the floor and scoring seven second-quarter points. On the defensive end, however, the Jays were getting the job done as they forced the Dutchmen into 1-for-12 shooting, less than 10 percent for the quarter. They led 28-16 at the break.
Wilson netted seven of her 10 points in the game in the third quarter as the lead blossomed to 19 by quarter's end, 45-26.
LVC did flip the script on Etown in the fourth. The Blue Jays, accustomed to outscoring their opponents in the fourth, were outdone by 10 points by the visitors. Lebanon Valley shot at a 40-percent clip in the fourth while making a pair of treys and hitting 4-for-6 from the foul line. Despite outscoring Elizabethtown, the deficit was too much to overcome.Â
Elizabethtown shot 20-plus free throws for the fourth consecutive game and finished plus-nine in the rebounding margin at 57-48.
Summer McNulty had eight points and tied for a team-high with three assists, along with Christ.
Jessica King blocked two more shots on the night and tied with Wilson for the team-high in rebounds at nine.
Taylor Huyck added nine points and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The Blue Jays will travel to York (Pa.) on Monday, November 29, at 6 p.m. to face the Spartans.
