ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- For the third time in four games, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team won by double digits after beating Alvernia 68-46 at Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday. The Blue Jays also ran its home non-conference record to 21-4 over its last 25 with the win.
Veronica Christ led the Blue Jays with 14 points.
Non-Landmark teams have struggled to figure out Elizabethtown (4-0) on its home court and Saturday's game with the Golden Wolves was no different. The Blue Jays held Alvernia (2-2) to just three first-quarter points and 1-for-11 shooting.
Etown picked it up in the second after also struggling from the floor in the first.
Cyleigh Wilson (2),
Taylor Huyck, and
Lindsay Boyd each hit second-quarter threes for the Jays. Huyck led the team in the second period with seven points on a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, including her trey. Wilson added six and
Summer McNulty had four in the quarter as Elizabethtown outscored the Golden Wolves 20-8 to take a 27-11 lead into halftime.
The Blue Jays have outscored opponents in every quarter this season, and have done most of their damage in the second and third quarters. Etown kept that going on Saturday as they put up 24 third-quarter points to Alvernia's 13. Christ also got going in the third after a tough shooting start to the game. She made four of her six attempts and had nine in the quarter. Christ also had five rebounds for the Jays in the third.
The lead grew to as many as 30 in the third after
Jillian Nagy dished off to
Emily Prowell on the left block for the layup. They led 47-17 after the sophomore's basket. To end the third,
Lindsay Boyd found
Emily Kramer underneath for the bucket with five seconds left. Etown took a 27-point lead into the fourth, 51-24.
Kramer then started the fourth with the and-one and converted the foul shot for the three-point play. The sophomore grabbed an offensive rebound off an Elizabethtown miss, took the contact and made the layup before hitting the free throw.
Alvernia got as close as 16 on Taliyah Malone's three with 4:07 to go. A little later, off an in-bounds play down low, McNulty found Christ on the block for the easy two.
Jessica King followed with a steal to get possession back for the Blue Jays. McNulty then hit a pair at the line as the lead grew back to 20 with 1:53 remaining.
Georgia Panopoulos also canned a pair at the charity stripe late in the game for the final points for Etown as they went on to win 68-46.
Elizabethtown outrebounded the Golden Wolves 51-34 and held them to 30 percent from the field for the game. King added a team-high nine rebounds while
DaniRae Renno grabbed eight of her own. Christ had 14 points to go along with seven boards. Wilson had five assists while McNulty dished out four. King also had a team-best five steals for Etown.
The women's basketball team will host Lebanon Valley on Tuesday, November 23, at 8 p.m.
