Blue Jays storm back in fourth quarter to beat F&M, Nolt earns 100th career win

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Plenty of numbers to go around for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team this weekend at Franklin & Marshall's Terry Greene Tip Off Classic. After an 11-point win for the 1,100th win in program history yesterday, the Blue Jays stormed back in the fourth quarter to overcome a double-digit deficit to beat the host Diplomats 59-53. The win marked the 100th career victory for Head Coach Veronica Nolt.

Elizabethtown (3-0) struggled from the field through the opening three quarters, hitting on less than 30 percent of their shots in each of those periods. Still, the Blue Jays only trailed by six heading into the fourth.

The first two shots of the fourth were threes by Franklin & Marshall (2-1) as the lead grew to 12. DaniRae Renno knocked down a pair of free throws to cut it back to 10, but next time down the floor, Kenzie Bradley drained the third three of the quarter for F&M to push it to a game-high 13-point advantage for the hosts with 8:10 remaining.

While Etown could have packed it in with things not going so well, the Jays, in fact, did the opposite. Over the next five and a half minutes, Elizabethtown didn't allow a single point to F&M while they made a 17-0 run to not only get back into the game, but take the lead on Veronica Christ's three-pointer from the right corner with 5:26 left. Christ provided 13 of her team-high 17 points in the fourth.

Emily Prowell, Jillian Nagy, and Christ combined for a 9-0 spurt that got the Blue Jays within four points, 48-44. Jessica King converted a Diplomats' turnover into two points on Prowell's assist to make it a one-possession game and force Franklin & Marshall into a timeout.

Out of the full timeout, Christ came up with the steal near midcourt and cashed it in from the corner to give Etown the one-point lead. Nagy split a pair at the line and then, after Lindsay Boyd's theft, Nagy found Christ for the layup to make it 52-48 for Elizabethtown with 4:04 to go.

Natalie Kolb finally ended F&M's scoring drought with a three, but King grabbed an offensive board off a Jays' miss and went right back up for the basket.

As the clock ticked under a minute and Kennedy Wilburn missed a layup underneath and King got Elizabethtown going the other way. Christ made the ensuing possession count as she drove baseline left side, went up for the floater near the basket, and took the contact as she swished the attempt. The grad student completed the three-point play to push the lead up to six, 57-51, with 28 seconds remaining.

Prowell sank two more free throws for Elizabethtown, who went 9-for-10 at the line in the fourth, to really put the game away.

Etown hit 8-of-13 in the final period and held Franklin & Marshall to 5-for-15. The main difference, that aided the Blue Jays, was the seven turnovers by the Diplomats.

Christ finished with her second 17-point effort of the weekend to lead the Jays. She was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Prowell pumped in 10 off the bench, including a team-best 6-for-8 at the foul line. Nagy also provided a spark for Etown off the bench. The junior had five points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Prowell and Nagy were each named to the All-Tournament Team.

Elizabethtown will have the week off before hosting Alvernia on Saturday, November 20, at 4 p.m.
