Blue Jays Open Landmark Conference Play with Wins Over Gophers, Cardinals

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College women's volleyball team opened Landmark Conference play with sweeps of Goucher and Catholic Saturday afternoon.

With the two wins, the Blue Jays move to 11-4 on the season and extend their winning streak to six matches.

Sophomore Georgianna Kahley registered her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs in match one against Gophers. Junior Bryann Miller recorded her sixth double-double of the season, tallying 10 kills and 13 digs against the Cardinals. Junior Sarah Hanks combined for 57 assists between the two matches while sophomore Kambrie Hepler finished the day with a total of 24 digs.

Down two (9-7) early in the first set against Goucher, Elizabethtown climbed back in front with three quick points capped off by an ace from senior Rileigh Hudock for the 10-9 advantage. The Blue Jays used that three point spurt to take back the momentum, finishing off the opening set with a 15-9 run for the 25-18 win.

Holding a two point lead (9-7) in the second set, Etown erupted for eight straight points to cruise out to a 17-7 advantage. Junior Courtney Westman tallied two kills over this stretch to fuel the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown did not lack back from that point forward, not allowing the Gophers to get closer that six and taking set two, 25-13.

In the final set of match one, the Blue Jays hit .333 to complete the sweep. Sophomore Katie Scaggs had five kills in the last frame while Kahley finished with four to propel Etown to the 25-17 victory.

It was more of the same from the Blue Jays in match two against Catholic, running out to a 12-4 lead in set one capped off by an ace from Miller.

The Cardinals managed to climb back within two at 14-12 but Etown answered with a 8-2 run finished off by an ace from senior Shelly Yohe for the 22-14 lead.

Kahley completed the first set win, sending home a pass from Hanks for the 25-18 victory in the opening frame.

The Blue Jays were dominant in set two, screaming out to a 12-3 lead thanks to yet another ace, this time from Kambrie Hepler to cap off the swift start. Catholic was not able to recover from this burst as Etown took the set set 25-12.

Down by one (8-7) early in the third, the Blue Jays found another run to claim momentum, rattling off six straight points for the 13-5 advantage.

The Cardinals continued to linger but were only able to move within two at 24-22 before Etown forced an attack error by Catholic to complete its second sweep of the day 25-22.

Elizabethtown returns home for another Landmark Conference match, hosting Moravian on Wednesday, October 6. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
