Cardinals break away early in win over Blue Jays

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Grace Hardy kept her goal-scoring streak alive, but Catholic scored three goals in the first quarter to break away from the Elizabethtown College field hockey and went on to beat Etown, 5-2. Hardy scored for the fourth consecutive game while Emily Garvin recorded her first of the season in the loss.

It only took 1:13 for Catholic (3-7, 2-0 Landmark) to post the first goal of the game. Three minutes later the Cardinals made it 2-0. Two minutes after a two-goal lead, Catholic made it 3-0 as Elizabethtown (5-5, 1-1 Landmark) had a big hole to dig itself out of less than halfway through the first quarter.

Garvin got one back for the Blue Jays late in the quarter. Hardy centered the ball into the circle, which went directly to the goalie. She was able to get her left pad on the ball, but the rebound did not go far and Sydney Aguilar ran into the path of the ball, touched it ahead to Garvin near the goal and the Etown midfielder wristed the ball into the net before the defenders could converge on her.

Catholic reestablished the three-goal lead less than a minute into the second quarter, though Hardy answered for the Jays. Aguilar was able to get to the endline and drive toward goal. The junior centered a pass onto the stick of Hardy, who did the rest for her ninth goal of the season, second-most in the Landmark Conference. The senior has six goals in her last four games for Elizabethtown.

After trailing 4-2 at halftime, only one goal came in the second half of play, and that was scored by the Cardinals to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

Angelina Giglio-Tos made eight saves for Etown. Megan Meyer was credited with a pair of defensive saves for the Jays.

Elizabethtown will host Lebanon Valley on Monday, October 4, at 4:30 p.m. in a makeup from a rain out earlier in the season.
