SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had the lead after each of the first three quarters, but in a close game, Susquehanna was able to overtake the Blue Jays in the fourth quarter and go on to an 81-73 win over E-town.
Lydia Lawson had a game-high 25 points for the Jays in the loss.
Down a bucket early, Lawson and
Angie Hawkins combined for the first eight points for Elizabethtown (10-10, 6-4 Landmark) as an 8-0 run got the Blue Jays in front.
Jillian Nagy beat the clock to end the first quarter, hitting a jumper with two seconds remaining as E-town went into the second ahead by four, 21-17.
Susquehanna (13-5, 5-5 Landmark) pulled back in front and led by as many as four, but the Jays came back and with a
Mikayla Ruth three-pointer, were back in front by a point in the final couple of minutes of the first half. A turnover at the other end by the River Hawks led to Lawson's fast break basket after
Rachel Christman's steal and pass led to the senior's transition bucket.
Elizabethtown led at the half, 32-31.
Both teams shot well in the third quarter and each team put up 24 third-quarter points. The Blue Jays were able to extend their lead to as many as eight points with 2:47 to go in the third.
Yaya Cannon's defensive board led to another fast break opportunity for E-town. Cannon got the ball out to Lawson and the starting point guard finished off the play with the layup.
Down seven, the River Hawks hit three straight shots to end the third, including a pair of treys. Susquehanna had the lead on Amalia Esposito's layup with 30 seconds left in the quarter.
Veronica Christ knocked down a jumper to close out the quarter as Elizabethtown led by one, 56-55.
Christ led off the fourth with a second straight jumper, but Esposito answered for Susquehanna with another three to tie the game, 58-58.
The deep shooting of the River Hawks played a factor in the final 20 minutes. After only hitting on three from beyond the arc in the first half, Susquehanna knocked down six more over the remaining two quarters.
Elizabethtown was ahead by four after Hawkins' two foul shots, but Sadie Comfort hit from deep to cut the deficit down to one. The shot started a 7-0 spurt that got Susquehanna back in the lead for good.
E-town was able to get within three on a few occasions, but the River Hawks hit their free throws down the stretch and were able to hold off the Blue Jays in the end, 81-73.
Lawson had a game-high 25 points for Elizabethtown, while Hawkins and Christ were also in double figures. Hawkins had 16 and Christ ended with 14 for the Jays. Erin McQuillen led Susquehanna with 21 points.
The Blue Jays are on the road this Wednesday, February 12, at Goucher for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
