TOWSON, Md. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team snapped a three-game winless skid Wednesday night at Goucher with a 58-50 win over the Gophers on the road.
Lydia Lawson led three in double figures for the Blue Jays while Anise Williams had a game-high 20 points for Goucher.
Lawson and
Veronica Christ combined for 21 points in the first alone while Elizabethtown (11-10, 7-4 Landmark) held the Gophers to just 16 first-half points on 8-for-31 shooting (25.8%). The Blue Jays dominated the second quarter, outscoring Goucher (5-17, 1-10 Landmark) 15-6 to take a 33-16 lead into the half.
E-town led big after the third quarter as they held a 21-point lead after three, once again outscoring the Gophers in the quarter. Goucher, though, rallied in the fourth and made it interesting by the end.
Nearly midway through the fourth, the Gophers were able to cut the deficit down to 12. A 7-0 run led my
Marissa Emlet helped the Jays advanced the lead back up to nearly 20. Emlet assisted on
Rachel Christman's layup to start the run. Christman then returned the favor and found the senior for a layup of her own. Emlet then drained a three the next time down the court after
Mikayla Ruth's steal. Christ found Emlet for the triple that made it 58-39 with 4:52 to go.
It didn't deter the Gophers as they fought back into single digits in the final minute. Williams hit a pair of free throws to make it 58-50 with 52 ticks left. The hole was too big, however, as Elizabethtown left the Decker Recreational Center with the eight-point Landmark Conference win to keep ahold of the third spot in the league standings.
Lawson led E-town with 16 points and six assists. Christ added 12 and Emlet scored 10 in the game. The pair also grabbed eight rebounds each. Lawson, Christ, and
Jillian Nagy accounted for the five threes on the night.
Elizabethtown will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, February 15, when they host Drew in a pivotal Landmark Conference matchup at Thompson Gym at 4 p.m.
