Seniors lead the charge as women's basketball upends Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- After being celebrated prior to Saturday's game with Drew at Thompson Gymnasium, seniors Lydia Lawson, Marissa Emlet, and Mikayla Ruth led the charge for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team as all reached double figures and propelled the Blue Jays to a 72-61 win over the Rangers. Lawson and Ruth each had double-doubles while Emlet tied a career-high with four treys in the game.

The three seniors helped account for the first seven points for Elizabethtown (12-10, 8-4 Landmark). Lawson found Ruth down low for the layup to start the game after Christ won the tip-off. Emlet knocked down her first triple of the game to make it 5-2 a few minutes later and after Lawson's steal, the senior point guard found Christ on the fast break for the layup that forced Drew (15-8, 6-6 Landmark) into a timeout down 7-2.

With things clicking for E-town, the seniors continued to shine in the opening quarter. After the Rangers brought it back down to a two-point game, Lawson, Emlet, and Ruth combined for a 9-0 run for the Jays to get them back ahead by 11. Ruth started and ended the run with a pair of makes at the foul line. The Harrisburg, Pa. native shot 9-for-12 at the line, with the nine makes tying a career-best.

Jillian Nagy hit a three and Angie Hawkins closed out the first quarter with a jumper on Elizabethtown's final offensive possession and the Jays went into the second ahead 24-12.

Lawson kicked off the second with a triple of her own after Ruth grabbed an offensive rebound, one of five at that end for Ruth, who finished with ten in the game. She found Lawson outside the arc for the three and the lead grew to 15.

Joey Meyers did her best to help keep the Rangers within striking distance. She had a team-high 13 points in the first half for Drew as they trailed at the half, 41-27. Emlet had 11 for E-town through two quarters, including three treys.

The Rangers won the third quarter, outscoring the Blue Jays 17-10 to cut the deficit down to seven points by the start of the fourth. E-town struggled from the floor, hitting just two of 10 shots in the quarter, but would pick it up in the fourth.

Katrina Wojtowicz knocked down a jumper to begin the fourth period as Elizabethtown's lead was now down to just five. Nagy answered on the next possession with a jumper a step inside the arc on Hawkins' assist. Lawson then hit two free throws after Emlet's block and rebound sent the senior out on the fast break. Lawson also made nine foul shots in the game and the Blue Jays were 19-for-25 as a team.

Minutes later, on consecutive possessions, Lawson got the ball into Ruth in the post and the senior made good on both layups as the lead was back into double digits with 6:09 to go. Emlet's fourth trey of the game pushed the advantage up to 14 after a errant pass by the Rangers led to a turnover. The Jays took Drew's 19 turnovers and turned them into 33 points.

Elizabethtown made six of 14 shot attempts in the fourth and went 7-for-9 at the free throw line as they were able to outscore Drew 21-17 and earn a big win in the Landmark Conference. Ruth led E-town with a season-high 22 points and 10 rebounds while Lawson scored 17 points and dished out 11 assists. Emlet added 14 points (4-6 3PT) and eight rebounds and a team-high two blocks.

The Blue Jays are on the road to round out the regular season, first at Juniata on Wednesday, February 19, at 7 p.m.
