Men's Volleyball Grabs Two Wins at Tri

ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team went 2-0 on the day, topping both King's and Rosemont in straight set Saturday afternoon.
 
With the wins, the Blue Jays improve to 8-6 overall.
 
Freshman Blake Hildebrand combined for 20 kills and eight digs to lead Elizabethtown. Senior Nick Baxter hit .464 overall with 16 kills. Freshman Dan Barckholtz tallied 37 assists and freshman Steve Swain recorded 12 digs and 13 kills.
 
ELIZABETHTOWN 3, KING'S 0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-17)
  • SET ONE: It was all Elizabethtown in the opening set from the jump, as the Blue Jays ran out to an 11-1 lead after a solo block by Baxter. Elizabethtown pushed its advantage to 13 (19-6) after a kill by freshman Cheston Jacobs and road that hot streak to a 25-12 set one victory.
  • SET TWO: The second set was much tighter, starting off tied at 10 with the Blue Jays calling timeout. It continued to be a battle, but Elizabethtown managed to squeak ahead with two straight points capped off by a kill by Swain. The Blue Jays continued to hold the lead the rest of the way and then wrapped up the second set with four of the final five points for the 25-21 win.
  • SET THREE:  Elizabethtown grabbed the momentum at the start of the third and final set, rattling off an 8-1 run to start the set. King's used a 5-0 run to close within six (16-10), midway through, but that is as close as they would get as the Blue Jays scored its first 3-0 win of the day with the 25-17 victory.
 ELIZABETHTOWN 3, ROSEMONT 0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-10)
  • SET ONE: Down one early, Elizabethtown went on a 14-3 run to go up 17-8 midway through the first. Rosemont closed back within seven at 18-1, but that is as close as they would get, as the Blue Jays took the opener, 25-14.
  • SET TWO: Down 9-5, the Hawks responded in the second set, rattling off seven straight points to move ahead 12-9. Elizabethtown once again had an answer, using a 7-3 rally to move back to the front 16-15. The Blue Jays pressed on and wrapped up the second with a  9-6 run finished off by an assist from sophomore Tim Zieber to Hildebrand for the 25-21 win.
  • SET THREE:  Elizabethtown jumped out to a 13-5 lead as sophomore Mark Hall hammered home a kill, forcing a Rosemont timeout. It was no contest in the third, as the Blue Jays continued to push its advantage to 11 (21-9) on their way to the 15 point win, 25-10.
  • NEXT MATCH
    Elizabethtown returns home on Tuesday, Feb. 18, when the Blue Jays host Neumann. Opening serve is set for 8 p.m.
