NEWARK, NJ.—The Elizabethtown men's volleyball team fell, 3-1 at Rutgers-Newark in the program's very first CVC Tournament appearance.
Arun Gopinath led the team with eight kills and six digs.
Braydon Ambruster totaled six kills while
Patrick Neyer tallied 13 assists. As a team the Blue Jays out blocked the Scarlett Raiders, 13-11.
Etown won the first set 26-24 before falling 25-27, 16-25, and 19-25 in the final three sets.
To begin set one the two teams traded points until Etown rattled off five straight points to take a 12-8 lead. Rutgers then jumped to a 20-14 lead with consecutive points. Kills from Gopinath and
Logan Smith brought the team within four of the Raiders. The Blue Jays came back within one at 22-23 before earning the final four points to win, 26-24.
Etown kept their momentum going early through the second set as they led, 11-6. Several errors from RUT-N doubled the Jays lead to 20-11. The Raiders then flipped the momentum to cut Etown's lead to 23-20. Rutgers ended the set on a 7-1 run to win, 27-25.
Set three saw the Blue Jays start off with a 7-5 lead. Rutgers then went on a four-point run to take a 9-7 lead. From there the Raiders never relinquished their lead as they won, 25-16. The Blue Jays struggled to get going in the fourth set but started off with 10-8 lead. The two teams traded points for a bit before a kill from
Cole Burkhardt brought the score to 17-18. Rutgers rattled off the next six points and Etown couldn't make a come back as they fell, 25-19.
The Blue Jays end their storied season 18-13 overall, which is the program's most wins in history. Etown also made their first ever CVC Tournament appearance before the Landmark Conference begins men's volleyball for the 2027 season.
