Knights squeak past Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Veronica Christ led three in doubles figures for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Saturday evening at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays took it to Southern Virginia, holding a lead in the fourth quarter, but it was the Knights that would come out on top after Savannah Christensen's last-second layup, 72-70. Lydia Lawson recorded a double-double of 19 points and 12 assists for E-town.

Southern Virginia (11-2) got out to an 8-2 lead as four of the five starters recorded baskets. The Knights took a seven-point lead, 17-10, into the second.

Despite giving away some size, the Blue Jays didn't back down. Elizabethtown (5-5) outscored SVU by eight in the second period.

Down as many as 11 points (23-12), Christ helped get the Jays back within single digits with a three-pointer and then consecutive made free throws a few possessions later. Lawson drained a jumper and then assisted on Ruth's layup to get E-town with four points with 4:54 left in the half. All this while holding the Knights scoreless over a two-and-a-half minute span.

Marissa Emlet hit one of the team's seven treys with 2:15 left in the second that made it a one-point game. Rachel Christman tied the game up at 32-32 on the fast break as Christ grabbed a defensive rebound, got the ball to Lawson, who then assisted on the sophomore's transition basket. Lawson ended the half with a three as time expired to send Elizabethtown into the locker room ahead 35-34.

The game remained a one-possession affair throughout much of the third until Anna Singer's three-pointer extended Southern Virginia's lead to four, 50-46. The Blue Jays then went on a 9-0 run to go ahead by five, capped off by Jillian Nagy's shot from the baseline with time ticking down on the shot clock. The freshman's bucket came off an out-of-bounds play with 55 seconds in the third.

E-town used more transition points early in the fourth to extend the lead. Christ and Lawson each had fast break baskets and Elizabethtown outscored So. Va. 20-7 on the break in the game. Ruth's trey with 7:11 to go gave the Jays their biggest lead of the night, at ten, 66-56.

From there, the Knights dialed up the defense and held the Blue Jays to only four points the remainder of the contest. Christensen tied the game after stealing the ball and going coast-to-coast with 44 seconds remaining.

Christensen was able to shake the defense and go in for the game-winning layup with 1.1 seconds to go. Elizabethtown had one final chance after advancing the ball over halfcourt. The desperation three as time ran out didn't go and Southern Virginia held on for the two-point win.

Christ had a team-high 21 points for the Blue Jays, while Lawson hit 8-of-16 from the floor and had 10+ assists for the second time this season. Katie Garrish had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Knights. Christensen finished with 16 points, five assists, and five steals for SVU.

Elizabethtown will host York (Pa.) on Monday at 6 p.m.
