ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- York (Pa.) came into Thompson Gymnasium Monday night and hit nine of their first 13 three-point attempts to jump out to a quick double-digit lead and never looked back as the defeated the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team 89-61 in non-conference play. Haley Luckabaugh had a game-high 37 points with nine treys.
Mikayla Ruth and
Veronica Christ each had 12 to lead E-town.
The first six baskets of the night for the Spartans were all from three-point range as they led Elizabethtown (5-6) 18-8 after Sammie Matteo dropped in one of the team's 18 treys on the night. Alana Bortner closed out the quarter with a seventh three in the opening ten minutes as York (8-6) went into the second ahead 23-10.
The barrage continued the Spartans would finish out the half 15-for-22 from beyond the arc. The Blue Jays were good on three of their nine attempts, with
Lydia Lawson,
Marissa Emlet, and
Yaya Cannon each hitting from deep.
Angie Hawkins had a team-high seven points by the half as E-town trailed 55-29.
Elizabethtown played even with the Spartans in the second half and held YCP to only three made treys, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Christ had eight second-half points to pace the Jays, while six of Ruth's 12 came over the final two quarters.
First-year players
Jillian Nagy, Cannon,
Emily Ward, and
Kendra Stamper each contributed to the final eight points of the game for EC. Stamper's free throw with less than two minutes to go was her first collegiate point. Ward's fast break layup was her first career bucket for the Blue Jays.
The women's basketball team will jump back into Landmark Conference play, on the road, at nationally-ranked Scranton on Saturday, January 11, at 4 p.m.
