LANGHORNE, Pa. – Elizabethtown College men's volleyball topped Cairn in straight sets Thursday night in non-conference action.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Highlanders fall to 0-6.
Freshman
Steven Swain hit .571 with eight kills. Senior
Nick Baxter finished with 10 kills and four digs. Freshman
Dan Barckholtz (19) and sophomore
Tim Zieber (15) combined for 34 assists, while freshman
Cameron Krebs recorded a team-high five digs.
Junior Anton Deleon was a bright spot for Cairn on the night, hitting .667 with eight kills.
ELIZABETHTOWN 3, CAIRN 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-22)
- SET ONE: Elizabethtown jumped all over the Highlanders in the opening set, running out to a 9-3 lead after a kill from Barckholtz. After Cairn closed back within four (14-10), the Blue Jays pushed their lead back to eight (18-10) with four straight points. The home did not recover from that point forward in set one, as freshman Tony Camillo hit home the winner, giving Elizabethtown the 1-0 lead, 25-14.
- SET TWO: Holding a one point advantage (6-5) early in the second, the Blue Jays rattled of five straight points capped off by a kill from freshman Blake Hildebrand, forcing a Cairn timeout. Elizabethtown continued to dominate the second, increasing its lead to seven at 18-11 after a kill from Baxter and an attack error by the Highlanders. Cairn would move within four at 22-18, but Elizabethtown ended the threat, scoring the final three points of the set and taking the second, 25-18.
- SET THREE: The third set turned into a much tighter affair as the two teams were deadlocked at 10-10 after a kill from Hildebrand. Cairn continued to battle the Blue Jays, tying the match at 15 and again at 17. Holding a one point lead at 19-18, Elizabethtown rattled off three straight points finalized by a kill from junior Steven Schreffler to go up 22-18. The Blue Jays did not allow Cairn to come any closer than two as E-town wrapped up its fourth straight set victory of the season, 25-22.
