Falcons Slip Past Blue Jays in Three Sets

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown men's volleyball snapped a four match winning streak, falling to Messiah, 3-0, Tuesday night in non-conference action.
 
With the lost, the Blue Jays fall to 4-2 on the season, while the Falcons improve to 2-2.
 
Senior Nick Baxter registered a team-high 11 kills and freshman Dan Barckholtz tallied 25 assists. Freshman Tony Camillo finished with five total blocks.
 
Freshman Luke Olson hit .636 with seven kills while junior Matt Knab dished out 34 assists for Messiah

ELIZABETHTOWN 3, MESSIAH 0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22)
  • SET ONE: Down two early in the first (6-4), Elizabethtown responded with three straight points to take a 7-6 lead, highlighted by kills from Baxter and Camillo. The Falcons answered with a 5-0 run to move ahead by four (11-7), forcing a Blue Jays' timeout. Elizabethtown closed within two (12-10) after another kill by Baxter and an ace by freshman Steven Swain, but the home team could not cut into the deficit anymore, dropping the opening set, 25-21.
  • SET TWO: Tied at seven, Elizabethtown went on the offensive, rattling off five straight points, including two block assists from Camillo. Messiah responded with a four point rally of its own to close the deficit to one (12-11). The visitors then moved back in front by two (17-15), with a second four point run, forcing a timeout by the Blue Jays. Elizabethtown marched back with in one (20-19) after Baxter and Camillo rose up for a block, but the Falcons closed out the second, scoring five of the final six points for the 25-20 victory.
  • SET THREE: After swapping four point runs to start the third set, Messiah held a one point advantage at 6-5. The Blue Jays creeped out to a two point lead at 11-9 after a kill by Swain, but the Falcons took advantage of three straight attacking errors by Elizabethtown to move back in front, 12-11. Messiah began to creep away, going up 19-16, forcing a timeout by Elizabethtown. The Blue Jays, however, would not go away quietly, charging back into the match and closing with in one at 23-22 and making Messiah take its first timeout of the night. E-town's comeback would come up just short though, as the visitors finished off the third and final set, 25-22.

    Next up, Elizabethtown takes its first road trip of the year, traveling to Cairn on Thursday, Jan. 30. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
