Hawkins ties career highs for Blue Jays in win at Drew

MADISON, N.J. -- Angie Hawkins tied several career highs for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team in a 79-76 road win at Drew on Saturday in Landmark Conference action. Hawkins had 25 points to lead the Blue Jays while Veronica Christ added 18 of her own. E-town hit on nine of 10 foul shots down the stretch to leave Baldwin Gymnasium with another league victory.

Drew (12-5, 3-3 Landmark) led by as many as 11 in the first quarter, but a late three by Christ brought Elizabethtown (9-7, 5-1 Landmark) within eight by the start of the second quarter.

The Blue Jays were in control in the second, holding the Rangers to just ten points over the ten minutes. Hawkins had the first four points for E-town as they started the period on a 7-0 run to get within a point. Marissa Emlet took a dribble inside the top of the key and swished a pull up jumper. Elizabethtown then split a pair of foul shots to make it 20-19 in favor of Drew.

After Joey Meyers extended the lead to three, Yaya Cannon drained on of the team's ten treys, which tied a season high. Cannon's three tied the game at 22-22 with 5:37 to go in the half.

The Rangers got up by four, but Hawkins drained a three-pointer with time winding down in the second to cut the deficit to just one by half. The Rangers led 30-29 at the break.

The Jays found themselves down seven almost midway through the third quarter, but another 7-0 spurt got E-town level at 46-46 as they held Drew scoreless for a little over two minutes. Christ's layup on the fast break started the run. Then, the junior hit a three between a pair of made foul shots each for Lawson and Hawkins. The West York graduate's two makes tied the game up with 4:16 to go before giving her team the lead with her second three of the game about a minute later. Lawson followed Hawkins' three with one of her own after Rachel Christman's steal as it turned into a 14-1 extended run.

Lawson then found Mikayla Ruth inside for the left-handed layup and the lead grew to as big as eight in the third for Elizabethtown.

The Rangers responded in the final two minutes, bringing themselves within a point at 55-54. Emlet collected an offensive rebound with time about to expire and beat the buzzer with her layup attempt to make it a 57-54 game going into the fourth quarter.

Jillian Nagy and Lawson assisted on consecutive made jumpers from Christ and just over two minutes into the fourth, E-town was back up by seven, 61-54. Lawson, whose tenth assist came on Christ's last jumper, knocked down a three of her own after Christ found her on the opposite wing for the open shot. The shot made it 65-56 and forced Drew into a timeout.

Hawkins' jumper in the paint gave Elizabethtown a ten-point advantage with 2:58 to go in the game, but the Rangers didn't go away.

With under a minute to go, Brooke Timinski came off the bench to can a three for Drew and bring the hosts within four at 74-70. After one of two at the line for E-town, Julia Ramos converted her driving layup and took the foul. Timinski had to come back in the game to attempt the free throw for Ramos, hitting the freebie to make it a two-point game, 75-73, with 25 seconds remaining.

Lawson was fouled twice thereon and hit all four foul shots as last-ditch attempts by Drew didn't go and Elizabethtown got out of Madison, N.J. with the 79-76 to stay tied for first in the Landmark at 5-1.

Hawkins tied her career-high with 25 points, which she also scored against Drew last season. Her five made free throws also tied a career-high for the sophomore. Christ hit 8-of-16 shots from the floor including a pair of threes for the Blue Jays. Four different players had multi-three-pointer games for E-town. Lawson ended with a double-double of 17 points and 10 assists, her third game with at least 10 dimes this season.

Elizabethtown will host Juniata on Wednesday, January 29, at 7 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium.
