ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Veronica Christ and
Angie Hawkins each provided 21 points for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team in a 67-52 win over Juniata Wednesday night at Thompson Gym.
Lydia Lawson was also in double figures for the Blue Jays with 10 points.
Juniata (4-14, 1-6 Landmark) grabbed a quick 6-0 lead on the Blue Jays in the first two minutes as Grace Long, Cassie Mock, and Gracie Stauffer each connected while Elizabethtown (10-7, 6-1 Landmark) missed twice and turned it over once.
Lawson got the Jays going with a triple, Hawkins took a feed from
Marissa Emlet for the layup, and a possession later, Christ tied it up at 7-7 with her first basket of the game.
Mikayla Ruth dropped in a three the next time down as the 7-0 run put E-town ahead 10-7 with a little over half the quarter to play.
Elizabethtown led by as many as five, but the Eagles closed out the quarter on a 5-0 run to send it into the second tied at 14-14.
Christ hit two early treys, two of her three in the game, to push E-town ahead by six, 20-14. Lawson then drove to the hoop and was fouled. Her layup was good and the senior made her foul shot as the lead grew to nine, 23-14.
Juniata worked its way back by the final minute of play in the second quarter. Cassidy Arnold's layup made it only a three-point game, 29-26, with 1:00 left. Lawson found Christ for a jumper, but Grace Long answered right back for the Eagles with a jumper of her own. As time was winding down,
Rachel Christman grabbed an offensive board and quickly passed to Lawson for the buzzer-beating layup. The Jays led 33-28 at the break.
Christ and Hawkins combined for 17 points in the third quarter alone and outscored Juniata between the two, 17-13. Hawkins had 10 third quarter points including a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. Christ was 3-for-5 from the floor in the third, including her third trey of the game. Elizabethtown was able to outscore the Eagles 24-13, to take a commanding 57-41 lead into the fourth.
While E-town only managed 10 fourth quarter points, the double digit lead was safe as the Blue Jays held Juniata to 4-for-15 (26.7%) from the field and never allowed the Eagles to get closer than 11 points.
Madison Colyer brought JC to within 61-50 with 1:32 remaining. Back-to-back three-point plays from Elizabethtown put the game well out of reach as Ruth and Hawkins both were fouled in the act of shooting with made baskets and each player hit the ensuing free throws. Hawkins' three-point play came with 33 seconds to go and put the score at 67-50. Mock hit a late jumper for the final score, 67-52.
Christ and Hawkins both hit nine of the 15 attempts from the floor and were a combined 7-for-7 from the foul line.
Jillian Nagy added six points off the bench and tied for a team-high with three steals.
The Blue Jays will host Scranton on Saturday, February 1, at 4 p.m.
