ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior
Nick Baxter became the first player in program history to compile 1,000 collegiate kills, as Elizabethtown topped Wilkes, 3-0, Thursday night in non-conference action.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Colonels drop to 1-1.
Combining his 515 kills from his prior school, Wilson, Baxter now sits at 1,010 career kills. He finished the night hitting the night .545 with 16 kills. Freshman
Blake Hildebrand tallied eight kills with a career-high four aces. Freshman
Steven Swain recorded a match-high 10 kills and freshman Dan Barkholtz added 26 assists and five total blocks.
ELIZABETHTOWN 3, WILKES 0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-13)
- SET ONE: With the match tied at five, Elizabethtown rattled off five straight points capped off by an ace by Hildebrand to make the score 10-5 and forcing a timeout by Wilkes. The Colonels closed within four twice at 10-6 and 12-7 before the Blue Jays pushed it lead to eight (15-7). Up 23-10, Wilkes began to quietly chip away at the lead, scoring four straight points of its own to cut the advantage to sice (23-16), but Elizabethtown shut the door with the final two points of the set, highlighted by a block from Swain and freshman Tony Camillo to take the opening set, 25-17.
- SET TWO: The Blue Jays came out firing in the second set, going on a 9-2 run to get things started. Elizabethtown continued to push, moving to 13-3 after another ace by Hildebrand. The Blue Jays managed to remain ahead by 10 (19-9) after a kill from Baxter, and road that wave to the end of the second set, taking it 25-13.
- SET THREE: It was another big run for the home team to open the final set, holding a 10-3 lead after Barckholtz found Hildebrand for a kill. The Blue Jays continued to press in the third, going up by 10 (17-7) after an attack error by JD Kirby. Elizabethtown finished off its second straight set victory in a row, closing out the final set, 25-13.
