Blue Jays stay unbeaten in Landmark with win over Goucher

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team improved to 12-0 against Goucher after beating the Gophers, 65-51, Wednesday night at Thompson Gymnasium. Mikayla Ruth had a team-high 12 points and Jillian Nagy contributed a season-best 10 points off the bench for the Blue Jays, who remained unbeaten in the Landmark Conference at 3-0.

The league's leading scorer, Veronica Christ, had the first bucket of the night with a jumper in the paint 20 seconds into the game. From there, Elizabethtown (7-6, 3-0 Landmark) never trailed, though Goucher (4-10, 0-3 Landmark) didn't go away, either.

Kyani Quarles helped keep things close in the first quarter. She had a game-high 19 points for the Gophers. E-town only led by a point with 5:30 left in the first before Marissa Emlet found Nagy inside for the layup to make it a three-point game. Emlet then began the fast break off Goucher's miss on the following possession that ended in a transition basket for Lydia Lawson.

Nagy recorded the final four points of the first for the Blue Jays. Lawson's steal with 1:39 to go led to Nagy's fast break layup. The freshman then grabbed an offensive rebound on a late miss and drew the foul with two seconds left. She sank both attempts to send Elizabethtown into the second ahead by eight, 18-10.

Clare Marchese knocked down a pair of early three pointers in the second for E-town as the lead blossomed to double digits.

The Gophers got back within eight after Claire Flynn drained a three from the left wing. The Jays would go on a 10-0 run over a 2:06 span in the latter stages of the second quarter to take that eight-point lead and push it to 18 with 38 seconds left, capped off by Ruth's layup on Rachel Christman's assist. Six of the ten points during the run were from Ruth. Christman assisted on Christ's layup to end the half as E-town led 42-22 at the break.

Goucher was able to eat into the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Blue Jays 16-9 to get within 13 by the end of the third. The Gophers held the Jays to just four points over the final three minutes and change.

Back-to-back treys from Alayna McFadden brought the visitors within seven midway through the fourth, though Christman dialed up a shot from beyond the arc to answer McFadden's. Elizabethtown worked the ball around and Marchese dished to Christman on the right wing for the three-point bucket.

McFadden once again got her team within a few possessions with a three-point play with 4:07 remaining in regulation. Goucher was out on the fastbreak and the sophomore finished off the play and drew the foul. She hit the foul shot to make it 57-49. Nagy responded with a layup on Marchese's third assist of the night. Ruth created a turnover a few possessions later in the backcourt and scored to increase the lead back up to 11 with under three minutes to go.

Goucher couldn't recover and Nagy finished off the game with another two makes at the free throw line where she finished 4-for-4, a season-best.

Ruth (12) and Nagy (10) hit double figures for Elizabethtown while Emlet had 12 rebounds and Christ grabbed another 10. Lawson dished out six assists and Emlet added five. Christ also blocked four shots in the game.

Elizabethtown will host Susquehanna on Saturday, January 18, at Thompson Gymnasium in a battle of Landmark unbeatens.
