ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A 13-0 run in the fourth quarter helped the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team break a 53-53 with Susquehanna and catapult the Blue Jays to a 75-65 win to remain unbeaten in the Landmark Conference.
Lydia Lawson recorded her third 20-plus point game of the season, pouring in a game-high 24 points for E-town in the win.
Angie Hawkins added 16 and eight rebounds while
Mikayla Ruth had her fifth consecutive game in double figures with 14 points and tied a season-high with nine boards.
Hawkins and
Marissa Emlet gave Elizabethtown (8-6, 4-0 Landmark) a quick 4-0 lead 37 seconds into the game.
Veronica Christ drained a three from the right wing to make it 7-2. Susquehanna (11-4, 3-1 Landmark) went on an 8-0 run to climb in front off Olivia Brandt's three-pointer with 5:37 to go in the first.
The lead exchanged hands several times over the remainder of the quarter with the River Hawks scoring the final four points to take an 18-17 lead into the second.
Brandt's basket in transition gave Susquehanna its biggest lead of the game to that point, five points, with 8:18 left in the half. Out of a timeout following the River Hawks' basket, Lawson canned a three to make it a two-point deficit. Madi Welliver made good on a layup the next time down as SUS answered right away.
A few minutes later, Lawson found
Rachel Christman in the corner for a three and the sophomore nailed the trey attempt. Christman also had a big rebound and put-back later in the game.
Ruth hit a three of her own from the top of the key after a scoreless two minutes for E-town. Her three took a seven-point deficit and cut it to four with 4:01 to go in the second. Susquehanna took a five-point lead, 34-29, into halftime.
Ruth and Hawkins led a 7-0 spurt out of the locker room for the Blue Jays to grab back the lead. Christ generated a turnover that wound up in the hands of Ruth for the fast break layup. While the River Hawks were held without a bucket, Hawkins knocked down a three from the right wing and after a Susquehanna miss, Christ got the ball to the sophomore inside for the layup to give E-town a 36-34 lead.
The Jays were able to maintain the lead until Amanda Lemire put Susquehanna back in front with a jumper. Then, to end the third, Lemire was able to beat the buzzer with her shot from beyond the arc as the River Hawks were back in front and led by four heading into the fourth, 51-47.
Clare Marchese started off the fourth with a ten-foot jumper on the right baseline. Lawson then knocked down a jumper in the paint the next time down to tie the game at 51-51. The senior gave Elizabethtown the lead a few moments later as she got inside for the driving layup.
The River Hawks would tie the game at 53-53, but a 13-0 run from the Blue Jays opened up the game. Hawkins kicked off the run with another trey. Christman corralled a three-point miss for the Jays on the next offensive possession and went back up for the layup as Susquehanna then called a 30-second timeout.
E-town wasn't done, however, as they continued to keep SUS off the scoreboard. Ruth, Hawkins, and Lawson added another eight points to the run, capped off by two straight layups from Lawson to make it a 66-53 game with 4:16 to go. Brandt finally broke Susquehanna's scoreless drought with 4:03 remaining.
The River Hawks could get as close as eight, but the damage had been done as the Blue Jays held off Susquehanna to remain as the only undefeated team left in Landmark Conference play.
Lawson led all scorers with her 24. Amalia Esposito had a team-high 16 points for Susquehanna.
The women's basketball team will travel to Catholic to face the Cardinals on Wednesday, January 22, at 7 p.m.
