Blue Jays fall in conference opener at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna got off to a 1-0 start in Landmark Conference play with a 4-0 win over the Elizabethtown College field hockey team Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field. Hunter Pitman had a pair of goals for the River Hawks in the win.

There was no score after the first quarter, but Brooke Zehr had a chance to give Elizabethtown (2-6, 0-1 Landmark) the lead with three ticks on the clock. Her shot was stopped by Emily Digaetano to send the game scoreless into the second.

E-town had the first two shots of the second, one that went wide of the cage and the second that Katie Hatchell put on goal. Digaetano made another save to deny the Blue Jays' a goal and the lead.

Less than a minute after her goalie's save at the other end, Pitman recorded her first of two on the day 5:05 into the quarter to give Susquehanna (3-6, 1-0 Landmark) the 1-0 advantage. A defensive save by Vivian Simone kept SU in front 1-0. Simone kept the ball out of the goal with only 18 seconds left before the half.

The River Hawks scored twice in the third quarter to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the game as Sam Banks and Pitman registered goals nearly three minutes apart. Jenn Sabbak tacked on a fourth for Susquehanna in the fourth quarter as they went on to hold the Jays scoreless, 4-0.

Madison Kubik and Hatchell tied for the team lead in shots for Elizabethtown. Madeline Kachel had a save in the game.

The Blue Jays remain on the road, at Wilkes, on Wednesday October 2, for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup with the Colonels.
