EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. -- Wilkes scored with one second left in the first overtime session to hand the Elizabethtown College field hockey team a 1-0 loss at Schmidt Stadium Wednesday night in non-conference action.
Madeline Kachel made six saves in the game for the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown (2-7) had chances in the opening minutes from
Lauren Scheib and
Chloe Smith. Vanessa Damgaard mades saves on both shots to keep it scoreless as Wilkes (8-4) withstood the early attack from the Jays.
After a scoreless first quarter, Damgaard was needed early and often for the Colonels in the second as E-town was on the brink of the game's first goal.
Madison Kubik,
Anna Mostoller, and Scheib each had scoring opportunities denies by the Wilkes' goalie in the first two and a quarter minutes.
Kubik had one saved off the line by Zoe Stepanski a little over eight minutes into the third period. Not long after,
Olivia Beachley was also denied, this time by Damgaard, one of her 10 saves.
Kachel made consecutive saves on Morgan Murphy with less than ten minutes to go in the game to keep it at a 0-0 game. Overtime would be needed to settle the contest.
The Wilkes' defense did its job in OT, blocking three shots and not allowing one to reach goal. The Colonels came through with just a single second left on the clock in the first overtime as Stepanski delivered a pass down field to Ali Dunn, who was able to score the game-winning goal.
Elizabethtown will host Juniata on Saturday, October 5, at 1 p.m.
