ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- No stranger to overtime this season, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team moved its record to 3-2 in one-goal affairs after
Anna Mostoller scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime on Saturday against Juniata at Wolf Field. The goal was a part of a comeback effort after the Blue Jays had trailed 1-0 after three quarters.
Katie Hatchell recorded the first goal of her career in the win.
Juniata (4-6, 1-1 Landmark) got on the board late in the first quarter off a penalty corner. Grace Alexander inserted and then took her place at the left post. The ball came from out top down low on the right to India Greenbury, who deflected the ball back across goal. Alexander batted the ball out of midair and into the cage to make it 1-0 for the Eagles.
Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week, goalie Nicole Piccioni, showed off her skills in the cage for Juniata. She stopped all five of the shots she saw through the first two quarters and kept her team's 1-0 lead intact at the half.
Elizabethtown (3-7, 1-1 Landmark) was the aggressor in the game, piling up corners and shots. The Jays finished the game with a 17-7 edge in corners and 18-5 advantage in shots, including 14 on goal.
E-town had a golden chance with a little over 10 minutes to go in the game as they were awarded a penalty stroke. Piccioni was able to correctly guess the way of the ball and got her stick on it to keep it out as she denied the Blue Jays the opportunity to tie the game.
Five minutes later, she was unable to stop Hatchell's shot. 2:10 after coming on as a fourth-quarter sub,
Chloe Smith sent a diagonal ball through the middle of the circle that got to Hatchell and the junior was able to take care of the rest. She scored from a tight angle for her first career goal that knotted the game at 1-1 with 6:26 left in regulation.
Juniata had the early chances in the first overtime session with a pair of penalty corners. One shot was blocked and that was all the E-town defense let up. Piccioni had to make several saves for her team in OT.
Madison Kubik, who led EC in shots in the game, put five of her six on goal. One of those nearly found its way in, but Piccioni was able to get turned around and with a diving stick was able to parry the ball away.
29 seconds into the second overtime, Kubik got another shot off that thudded off Piccioni's pads. The rebound sat in the middle of the circle, where Mostoller was able to possess, fight off a defender, and lift a ball into the cage to win the game for Elizabethtown. It was her first of the season and first in an Elizabethtown uniform.
Madeline Kachel only needed to make one save in the win for the Blue Jays.
The field hockey team will play at York (Pa.) on Wednesday, October 9.
