ORANGE, Calif. -- The Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team found itself down by double digits in the second half and got back within three before falling at Chapman 20-16 on the team's spring break trip.
Kate Ziegler scored a career-high six goals in the game for E-town.
Chapman (2-2) scored twice in the first minute to go ahead 2-0 on Elizabethtown (0-4), but goals by Ziegler and
Madelyn Baker got the Blue Jays level at 2-2 at 25:24. The Panthers would retake the lead, though E-town battled back and tied it up for a second time on
Jesse Sartor's goal, coming from a free position attempt.
Ziegler tallied consecutive goals that gave Elizabethtown its first lead of the game at 7-5. A failed clear by Chapman turned into an offensive possession for the Jays as
Lexie Sharp came up with a ground ball. Ziegler picked up a ball off a missed shot and 30 seconds later, the sophomore had scored to make it 6-5.
Julia Ferrante grabbed the ensuing draw control and Baker found Ziegler for her second straight.
The goal, which came at 12:46 of the first half, was the final goal the Panthers would allow E-town. Chapman registered the games final seven goals of the first half and went into the break up 12-7.
After the Panthers scored the opening six goals of the second half to take a commanding 18-7 lead, Elizabethtown stormed back with eight unanswered goals over a 15-minute span.
The Blue Jays controlled five of the eight draw controls stemming from their goals and
Emily Garvin grabbed three of the five to help keep the momentum in the Blue & Gray's favor. Sharp scored at 17:38 to start the 8-0 run. Garvin picked up the next draw control, which ended up with Baker scoring for the Jays to get the deficit back into single digits, 18-9.
Ziegler had a hand in the next three goals for Elizabethtown, netting two and assisting on one. By 12:07, it was 18-12.
In a minute's time, as
Jennifer Beihoff held Chapman scoreless during the run, E-town posted three more goals to get within three.
Mirthe Berends scored on her only free position of the game at 6:17, Garvin possessed the next draw control and ended up with the goal at 5:47, grabbed the next draw control, and E-town was only down 18-15 thanks to Baker's goal at 5:18. Beihoff entered the game with five minutes to go in the first half.
Time, though, wasn't in Elizabethtown's favor. After erasing a double-digit deficit, Chapman broke through to end the drought and scored twice in 23 seconds to extend the lead up to five, 20-15.
Sharp was able to put another on the board with 22 seconds to go in the came on Ziegler's third assist. The Panthers ended up with the 20-16 win.
Ziegler had six goals and three helpers in the game for nine points, one off her career-high. Sharp added four goals and Baker had a hat trick. Both players each recorded an assist for the Blue Jays.
Abby Kopytko made five saves and Beihoff finished the game with six. Preetha Raj had seven in goal for Chapman.
Elizabethtown will host Alvernia at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at Wolf Field.
