Women's lacrosse dealt loss in Landmark opener at #14 Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In their Landmark Conference opener at nationally-ranked Catholic Saturday afternoon, the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team hung with the 14th-ranked Cardinals in the first half until Catholic began to pull away and went on to win 20-4. Madelyn Baker led the Blue Jays with a pair of goals.

Catholic (5-2, 1-0 Landmark) scored four times in the first four minutes to take a 4-0 lead. Less than a minute after Molly Monaghan's second of the season put the Cardinals up 4-0, Elizabethtown (2-6, 0-1 Landmark) responded with a goal from Lexie Sharp. Jesse Sartor picked up the draw control and put E-town in possession of the ball. Sharp finished off the sequence with her 26th of the season.

Abby Kopytko made a pair of stops, one on Holly Regan and another on Megan Ellis to keep it at 4-1. Emily Garvin grabbed the ball off Kopytko's second save on Catholic's possession and the Blue Jays were headed the other way. A successful clear turned into Baker's first of two goals in the game.

Sharp won the next draw control, one of seven in the game for E-town. This time Kate Ziegler found Baker for her second of the game and team-leading 28th of the season. Elizabethtown was within a goal at 4-3 with 21:56 left in the first half.

The Cardinals' defense stymied the Jays the remainder of the first half and for 29:39 of the second. Ziegler tallied Elizabethtown's fourth and final goal of the game with 21 seconds left in regulation. Catholic had scored 16 unanswered up to that point and opened the Landmark Conference schedule with the 20-4 win.

Elizabethtown will host Stevenson on Wednesday, March 27, at 4 p.m.
