LANGHORNE, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team reached double figures in wins with their third Continental Volleyball Conference victory of the season after sweeping Cairn Friday night.
Ethan Maurer led E-town with team-highs of 12 kills and nine digs.
Elizabethtown (10-15, 3-5 CVC), now tied for eighth in the conference with Randolph-Macon, started off Friday night's contest trailing in the early going. Only down 3-1, the Blue Jays took their first lead of the set at 6-5 on a service ace by
Kyle Murray. Kills by
Nick Baxter, two of his 11 on the night, were on either side of Murray's ace and EC was up two after three straight.
Cairn (3-13, 1-7 CVC) got level at 8-8, but the Jays scored four in a row on three attacking errors by the Highlanders and
Joey Nelson's ace. The teams then went on trade off the next 15 points before CU got two straight to break the back-and-forth streak. Though the set was within two points, E-town never gave up the lead and outlasted the Highlanders 25-19.
The Blue Jays had to come back in the second set after being down 17-13. The lead hadn't gotten to more than three for either side until Cairn jumped ahead by four on a bad set by the Jays.
The Highlanders had Elizabethtown with its back against the wall at 23-21, just two points away from tying up the match. EC finished off the set with the final four points to rally from down two to win by two, 25-23.
Friday's third set was no different than the one prior to it. Back and forth it went as Elizabethtown and Cairn traded points and rallies until late when it was tied 20-20. The Highlanders needed the set to extend the match, but the Blue Jays were ready to end the night with a sweep.
Maurer put E-town ahead only to have Cairn tie it back up at 21-21. A service error by CU followed by a block from
Mark Hall and Maurer forced the Highlanders into a timeout as they trailed 23-21.
Tim Zieber set up Maurer for his 12th and final kill of the match to put the Jays within a point of the match victory. Cairn staved it off for one point, at least, but Baxter's 11th kill of the night ended things at 25-22.
Elizabethtown won its third straight match, a season-best for the first-year program. The Blue Jays will go for their fourth straight victory with another CVC match tomorrow at Neumann at 11 a.m.
