Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's volleyball sweeps Immaculata, Brooklyn

IMMACULATA, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team needed a conference victory to keep pace in the playoff race on Saturday. The Blue Jays did just that by sweeping Immaculata to keep the Mighty Macs winless and went on to defeat Brooklyn in their second game of the day. E-town also swept the Bulldogs.

Elizabethtown (9-15, 2-5 CVC) got out 15-4 in the first set against Immaculata (0-11, 0-6 CVC) before the Mighty Macs decided to take a timeout. The Blue Jays rolled through the first set 25-6 after hitting .615. The second set was nearly as impressive from an offensive standpoint. The Jays only committed a single error, as they did in the first set, and though the hitting percentage dipped, it was still at .476 while they held Immaculata in the negatives for the second straight set to begin the match.

A 25-8 second set victory put Elizabethtown one away from the sweep. The Mighty Macs didn't go down easily as the third set came to be within three points in the end. The teams traded off the first seven points of set three with Joey Nelson giving E-town a 4-3 advantage. The Blue Jays had led by as many as seven, but Immaculata crept their way back into it. Down 13-6, it was 17-16 for EC after Garrett Pepper's kill.

Four straight from E-town made it 21-16 and the Jays didn't give up the lead and went on for the sweep. Ethan Maurer led with 11 kills while Nick Baxter added nine and a team-high three aces. Tim Zieber had 28 assists for the Jays.

While the sets were closer against Brooklyn (6-10), the results were still the same for the Blue & Gray. Baxter took the lead against the Bulldogs with a match-high 13 kills. Maurer added eight and Nelson had seven. Mark Hall and Baxter each recorded four blocks and Zieber had another 22 assists.

Elizabethtown plays at Cairn on Friday, March 22, at 7 p.m.
