MADISON, N.J. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team trailed at halftime, but outscored Drew in the third and fourth quarters to leave Baldwin Gym with an important 65-60 Landmark Conference win.
Lydia Lawson had 24 points for E-town and
Veronica Christ pitched in 16 points. The victory kept the Blue Jays in the second spot in the league standings.
Unlike the first game the two teams played back on January 21, Saturday afternoon's game was much closer throughout. Christ and Lawson had Elizabethtown (16-6, 9-3 Landmark) ahead 7-2 four minutes into the first quarter.
Mikayla Ruth kept them there with a three, the second of the quarter for the Blue Jays.
Julia Ramos helped get Drew (13-9, 6-6) into the lead for the first time as she scored five straight for the Rangers, who now led 14-12 with 1:29 to go in the opening quarter of play. Ramos led all scorers with 25 in the game.
After the Jays led 16-15, Ramos nailed a trey to start the second and return the lead to the Rangers. The Drew point guard assisted in extending the team's lead to as many as eight with 5:08 remaining in the half, but a three from Christ and
Roni Isenberg's offensive rebound and put back cut it down to three. Isenberg grabbed 10 rebounds in the game for Elizabethtown.
The Blue Jays were down three as time was running out in the first half, but Christ's steal led to a shooting foul for E-town.
Rachel Christman hit both with just a tick left on the clock and EC was down only a point at the break, 29-28.
Aly Axman and Ramos each hit shots early in the third as Drew led by six. A couple of threes by Elizabethtown near the end of the quarter helped get the Jays back in front 43-41.
Angie Hawkins found Christ for a three-ball as the sophomore responded to Hailey Stine's three the possession prior. The Rangers, then, turned it over, and back at the other end, Isenberg connected on the bucket inside on Lawson's assist. A second straight turnover led to Lawson's trey, which put Elizabethtown ahead.
Marissa Emlet ended the third with another three-pointer to make it 46-42 for Elizabethtown going into the final quarter.
E-town stayed in front, though Drew threatened to take the lead back. Erin Frederick's basket cut the deficit to only one. Hawkins answered with a pair of free throws. The Blue Jays hit 11-of-14 free throws in the second half and were 17-for-22 in the game.
Christ kept a possession alive with under three minutes left in the game and Elizabethtown ahead by five. Isenberg would wind up finding Emlet for the layup to extend it to seven. Stine drilled a three the next time down as the Rangers clung to life with under two to go.
Ruth and Lawson would hit free throws late to help seal the game for Elizabethtown. Lawson hit two big ones with 15 seconds remaining to put the Jays ahead by six instead of four. It would become big as Brooke Timinski would drop in a three-pointer with 10 seconds left. Lawson iced the game with four seconds remaining with another two freebies.
The Blue Jays outrebounded a physical Drew team 42-34 and made their impact on the game at the foul line with their 17 makes. The Rangers were only 6-for-10 at the charity stripe. Lawson and Christ were a combined 13-for-25 from the field and 5-for-11 from deep.
Elizabethtown will host Juniata on Wednesday, January 13, at 7 p.m.
