ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team wasted no time in getting after Juniata en route to a dominating 63-42 win to clinch a home Landmark Conference semifinal next week.
Mikayla Ruth had a team-high 15 points and
Lydia Lawson and
Marissa Emlet each had double-doubles for the Blue Jays in the win.
Threes by Lawson and
Veronica Christ put Elizabethtown (17-6, 10-3 Landmark) up early on as Juniata (9-15, 7-6 Landmark) spent nearly half the first quarter looking for their first basket. The Eagles missed on their first six shot attempts before Gracie Stauffer connected down low after grabbing an offensive board.
While E-town's shots were falling, Juniata struggled to follow suit. The Eagles managed to stay closer by way of the foul line. Five of their 12 first-half points were from the free throw line. After Emlet knocked down a three from the top of the key, Kaeana Rebert hit three freebies after being fouled on a three-point attempt. Her three makes put the score at 13-7 in favor of the Blue Jays over halfway through the first quarter.
Lawson got Elizabethtown out on the break and dished off to Christ, one of her game-high nine assists in the first half. That got the score into double digits for the first time, though Grace Long hit Juniata's only three of the first half with 1:31 left in the opening quarter. Ruth finished on the Lawson-led fast break with less than half a minute to go and E-town led 19-10 after one.
The Blue Jays put their stamp on the game in the second quarter, only allowing the Eagles to score two points in ten minutes. Those two came on Stauffer's layup at 6:40 of the second quarter.
Rachel Christman capped off the first half by swishing a three as the shot clock was about to expire to put the game at 40-12 with 22 seconds to go before half. E-town led by the same score at the break.
Juniata was able to bring its shooting percentage up in the second half as they shot just shy of 37 percent. They were 3-for-29 in the first half (10.3%). 12 of Stauffer's game-high 17 points came in the second half as the Eagles' guards were able to feed their center in the post for points in the paint.
Elizabethtown's shooting barrage quieted down after the half, but the damage had already been done as the Jays saw the game out and clinched their first Landmark home semifinal next Wednesday. Lawson posted 14 points and 10 assists and Emlet ended with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Christ also reached double figures with 10. Ruth's 15 came on 7-for-10 shooting.
E-town will conclude the regular season with Moravian on Saturday, February 16, at 2 p.m.
