ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A fourth-quarter surge by Moravian wasn't enough to get the Greyhounds past the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team on Saturday at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays held off Moravian for an 82-79 win to close out the regular season 11-3 in the Landmark Conference and with their seventh straight win overall.
Emily Walls put Moravian (16-9, 8-6 Landmark) up 6-2 in the first 1:30 of the game with a pair of threes, but Elizabethtown (18-6, 11-3 Landmark) worked its way back into a 10-10 on the backs of
Roni Isenberg,
Veronica Christ, and
Angie Hawkins.
Lydia Lawson found Hawkins on the fast break to make it 10-10 with 4:18 to go in the first.
Mikayla Ruth and Hawkins each hit shots to make it a 10-0 run for the Blue Jays, who now led 14-10.
The second quarter belonged to Elizabethtown, who outscored Moravian 21-10. Though dealing with some foul trouble, the Jays made it work as the five on the court, regardless of the particular lineup, continued to play with a team-first mentality. Lawson broke a 23-23 tie with a layup that came off
Marissa Emlet's steal. Emlet got in the paint for a layup to make it 27-23.
Rachel Christman had her player boxed out and an over-the-back foul sent the freshman to the foul line as the Jays were in the bonus. Christman calmly knocked down both shots to extend the lead to six.
With Moravian struggling offensively, E-town took advantage as Hawkins continued to be a force. On back-to-back possessions, the West York grad drove in for layups and Elizabethtown was on the verge of a double-digit lead for the first time.
Clare Marchese, in fact, put the Blue Jays ahead by double figures with a pair of free throws with less than 30 seconds to go in the half. Marchese played an important 12 minutes off the bench and scored six points, each one mattering for EC.
The Blue Jays took a 13-point lead in the fourth after outscoring Moravian in the third, 23-21.
Landmark leading scorer Maddie Capuano only had 11 points in the first half, but got going for Moravian in the second half and helped lead the charge as the Greyhounds stormed back in the fourth quarter. Capuano's three at 7:17 made it 66-59. She had nine straight points for MOR and, after Nadine Ewald's layup with 3:49 left, the Greyhounds were within four just like that.
Ruth found Marchese with a no-look pass through traffic and the freshman put it up and in for E-town. Capuano responded with a layup at the other end to keep it at a four-point deficit.
Elizabethtown made a few key defensive plays late in the game. First, Emlet forced a Capuano turnover and sent Lawson off on the fast break for the bucket to make it 78-75 with 1:22 to go. Then, after Lawson canned two foul shots to return E-town to the lead at 80-79 after Walls had put Moravian ahead 79-78, Lawson snuck down and picked the ball off Ewald in the post with 14 seconds remaining. The Greyhounds quickly fouled and sent Lawson to the line.
Still down, Moravian turned the ball over for a third time, this out of a timeout, as Christ came up with the ball with four seconds showing. She was fouled with only a second left and there was no time for the Greyhounds to be able to get off a shot and Elizabethtown hung on for the 82-79 win. Moravian was previously 15-0 when scoring at least 60 points in a game this season.
Lawson led four in double figures for the Blue Jays with 18 points. Hawkins had 16 off the bench, Christ scored 15, and Ruth posted 12. Capuano led Moravian with 32 points on 11-for-25 shooting.
Elizabethtown, the second seed in the Landmark Conference, will host third-seeded Catholic on Wednesday, February 23, at Thompson Gymnasium. The Landmark Conference semifinal is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
