ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team were an assist away by
Lydia Lawson from having three players with double-doubles in Wednesday night's 73-45 win over Goucher in Landmark Conference action at Thompson Gymnasium.
Angie Hawkins recorded her first career double-double and
Mikayla Ruth added one of her own in E-town's win. Lawson led the Jays with 17 points.
Elizabethtown (15-6, 8-3 Landmark) utilized a fast start and a strong finish to achieve the 28-point conference victory. With Goucher (5-17, 0-11 Landmark) short on numbers, the game plan was evident from the start. The Blue Jays got out on the break early and often and finished the first quarter with eight fast break points.
E-town held the Gophers scoreless for over half the quarter and built up a 13-point lead, capped off by Ruth's steal and Emlet's fast break layup to make it 15-2 with 4:07 to go in the first. The Blue Jays led 23-7 after 10 minutes.
Lawson and Hawkins combined to put up the first seven points of the second quarter for Elizabethtown, who were up 30-7 with 7:57 left before halftime. The Jays' defense bottled up leading scorers Anise Williams and Alayna McFadden. Nicole Wolard was Goucher's main source of points in the half. She got the Gophers into double digits with her layup at 3:59 as they trailed 34-11 at that point. The senior would hit a jumper with seven seconds left in the first half to cut E-town's lead down to 20, 39-19.
While Goucher struggled to put together any kind of run, they didn't allow Elizabethtown to pull away in the third quarter either. Both teams recorded 11 third-quarter points.
Lawson doled out one of her game-high nine assist to
Clare Marchese in the fourth quarter as the freshman got in on the scoring. She knocked down a jumper just inside the foul line.
Britt Ritter assisted on Hawkins' trey with 1:41 left and
Liz Hoffman forced a steal late in the game and knocked down a pair of foul shots with less than a minute to go.
Elizabethtown dominated from the foul line and below with 46 points in the paint. The bench contributed 22 and the Jays tallied 24 points off turnovers.
Lawson's 17 points were a game-high and her nine assists put her one shy of the unconventional double-double. Ruth and
Veronica Christ each had 11 points. Ruth added 12 rebounds and Hawkins had 10 to go with her 14 points off the bench. Held in check most of the game, Williams ended with a team-high 15 for Goucher. Wolard posted 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The Blue Jays will face Drew on the road this Saturday, February 9, at 2 p.m.
