ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team got within three with under 10 minutes to go in Wednesday night's non-conference matchup with Marymount (Va.), but a first-half hole was too big to get out of as the Saints held on for a 13-8 win over the Blue Jays.
Madelyn Baker led E-town with three goals.
Elizabethtown (0-3) found themselves down 3-0 in the first 2:03 of the game, but
Mirthe Berends put home her third of the season on
Jesse Sartor's first assist of the year to make it 3-1. Bridgette Stacom got the goal back with one of her game-high six 13 seconds later.
The Saints pulled ahead to an 8-1 lead after Jessica Crew's goal at 13:41 of the first half. Baker got her first of three in the game with less than 10 to go before halftime.
Kate Ziegler scored for the Blue Jays with under a minute to play in the half and E-town trailed 9-3 at the break.
Marymount extended the lead back to eight, 11-3, with two goals to open the second. Then, Elizabethtown scored the game's next five goals and got to within three at 11-8 with 8:14 to go in regulation. Ziegler,
Jess Principe, Baker (2), and
Lexie Sharp scored during the Jays' 5-0 unanswered run.
That was as close as E-town got, though. Crew scored another two goals to finish out the game and Marymount won 13-8.
Jennifer Beihoff and
Caity Howell split duties in goal for Elizabethtown. Howell made seven saves. Holly Reik had nine stops for the Saints.
Elizabethtown plays at Penn State Abington on Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m.
