Men's volleyball downed by #14 Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- A pair of Landmark Conference institutions battled it out in Continental Volleyball Conference men's volleyball action for the very first time as 14th-ranked Juniata swept Elizabethtown Tuesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

Elizabethtown (4-9, 1-3 CVC) had a tough time establishing the attack as Juniata (8-2, 3-2 CVC) held them under a .100 hitting percentage for the match. E-town had a season low 15 kills in the three sets.

Ethan Maurer blocked Quinn Peterson for the first point of the night with a solo block on the play, but six straight by the Eagles had them ahead quickly, 6-1. The Blue Jays found themselves down 15-3 and called timeout.

Elizabethtown was able to get within 17-8 after Kyle Murray's kill set up by Nick Baxter. Maurer and Baxter had consecutive kills to make it an eight-point deficit in the first set. Juniata closed it out with a 7-2 run and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

Down 5-4 in the second, E-town was right in the thick of it until the Eagles began to pull away. A 6-0 run pushed their lead up to 11-4 and from there the Jays were unable to recover. Steven Schreffler's kill out of a timeout helped Elizabethtown as did an unforced error on the attack by Juniata on the next point, but EC couldn't get closer than five as the Eagles went on to win set number two, 25-13.

The Blue Jays battled back from an early third-set deficit. Trailing 8-4, four of the next five went Elizabethtown's way. A service ace by Joey Nelson made it 9-7 and the next point was an attacking error by Juniata and E-town was back within a point at 9-8.

The Eagles would maintain their lead, but it wouldn't get larger than three at any point until back-to-back aces by Peterson extended the lead to five, 21-16. Juniata put up five of the next six following Peterson's pair of aces and finished off Elizabethtown with the 3-0 sweep.

Baxter had a team-high 10 kills for the Blue Jays while Nelson posted 12 assists. Schreffler and Orion Lage each had four digs for E-town. Joe Fick tied Baxter for a match-high with 10 kills to lead the Eagles.

Elizabethtown will play a pair of non-conference games at York (N.Y.) on Saturday, February 23.
