ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team had a busy weekend after playing a pair of matches in New York state before returning home to face Rutgers-Newark in conference play on Sunday. The Blue Jays went 1-2 over the two days with their lone win coming in a 3-0 sweep of York (N.Y.).
Nick Baxter tied an NCAA record in that victory.
Baxter's attacking prowess was on full display as York (N.Y.) (1-8) had no answer for the junior. His 26 kills over the three sets tied the NCAA Division III men's volleyball record set by Jake Roessler of SUNY New Paltz in April 2017. Corey Pieper of Rutgers-Newark also had 26 kills over a three-set match. Baxter joined them with his 26 against the Cardinals.
Elizabethtown was swept in its second match of the day by John Jay.
Joey Nelson and Baxter each recorded 11 kills to lead the Jays.
E-town was back in action 24 hours later in Continental Volleyball Conference action against Rutgers-Newark on Sunday. The Scarlet Raiders took the first set 25-9 for an early 1-0 lead in the match.
One of
Nick Spangler's 10 assists came on Baxter's kill to open the second set as Elizabethtown (5-11, 1-4 CVC) led after the first point. Rutgers-Newark (7-3, 4-1 CVC) got the next six to take a 6-1 lead. The Jays were down 9-5 after a service error by the Scarlet Raiders and
Kyle Murray's kill as they tried to keep within striking distance.
It was back to 11-8 on Nelson's kill and Murray's service ace with an attacking error sandwiched between. RUN eventually began to pull away and closed out E-town 25-16 in the second.
The Blue Jays had another late run in the third set, kick started by Nelson's solo block at the net. Curtis Chance went up for the kill, but Nelson got his hands in the path and Chance's swing caromed off Nelson and into the back corner for the point. Nelson then served up a pair of aces and EC trailed 23-18.
The Scarlet Raiders stopped the short spurt with the final two points of the match to get the CVC victory.
Baxter led with 10 kills for Elizabethtown. Spangler, Nelson, and
Derek Yenser added assists.
Orion Lage had three digs as a sub off the bench and Murray posted a team-high two blocks for the Jays.
E-town will take on Arcadia and Messiah on Saturday, March 2, at Glenside, Pa. The matches are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
