#11 Southern Virginia beats men's volleyball

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Nationally-ranked No. 11 Southern Virginia put its unbeaten Continental Volleyball Conference record on the line in Saturday morning's matchup with the Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team. The Knights won in three sets over the Blue Jays to stay undefeated in the CVC.

Southern Virginia (9-1, 5-0 CVC) jumped all over the Jays from the first service. The Knights got out to a 16-2 lead as Elizabethtown (4-8, 1-2 CVC) struggled to get its bearings early on. SVU took the first set 25-10.

E-town settled in by the second set and kept it close with So. Virginia. Consecutive kills by Ethan Maurer got the Blue Jays within three points at 12-9. A quick spurt by the Knights put them back up by six, but Elizabethtown responded with six straight points to bring the second set within a point, 18-17. An ace off the left hand of Nick Baxter made it 18-16 before Kyle Murray and Tim Zieber combined for a block that made it a one point deficit.

Southern Virginia rallied for four consecutive points to take hold of the second set at 22-17. They'd finish it out for a 25-20 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Blue Jays grew stronger and more confident as the match went along, as they did in last night's match with the Royals. Baxter helped EC get out to a 4-2 lead in the third set, though the Knights came storming back to take the lead away at 5-4. The teams traded points after Zieber's kill made it 8-8. Five of the next six points belonged to E-town, who now led 16-14 and were in position to force a fourth set and extend the match.

The Knights held strong and fended off the Jays. Maurer and Baxter had kills that kept Elizabethtown in front. Baxter's made it 21-10 in favor of EC, but two kills from Daniel Aina returned SVU to the lead and forced E-town into a timeout. Aina put Southern Virginia within a point of the sweep, but Baxter took Zieber's pass and put it down to keep the Blue Jays alive. Paul Clark, who led the Knights' attack on the day, got the final kill to give the visitors the sweep, 25-23, and 3-0.

Baxter led Elizabethtown with 15 kills. Zieber had 19 assists and 10 digs and Maurer produced 5 kills and 9 digs for E-town.

The Blue Jays will make up their postponed game with Juniata from February 12 this coming Tuesday, February 19, at Huntingdon, Pa. for a 7 p.m. CVC matchup with the Eagles.
