Men's volleyball completes comeback for first CVC victory

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Down two sets to one to Eastern Mennonite Friday night, the Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team showed some resiliency and went on to win the fourth set and eventually the fifth for its very first Continental Volleyball Conference win and first home match victory on the season. Nick Baxter led the way with 31 kills and Tim Zieber provided a season-high 46 assists.

It was a total team effort by Elizabethtown (4-7, 1-1 CVC), who won the first set after back-to-back kills by Baxter gave the Blue Jays a narrow 26-24 first-set win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Eastern Mennonite (1-10, 1-3 CVC) followed the lead of Martin Poh, who had a team-best 21 kills for the Royals. Poh recorded kills for the first three points of the second set and had four of EMU's first seven points. The Royals were up 8-2, but a rally by E-town was helped out by unforced errors from Eastern Mennonite. After getting even at 11-11, EMU scored six straight to take back control and went on to even the match up at 1-1 with a 25-20 second-set win.

Elizabethtown was down in the third, but got within two points on Ethan Maurer's kill to make it 21-19 as the Jays trail going into the final stretch of the third. The Royals edged EC 25-21 and had E-town right where it wanted.

It looked as if Eastern Mennonite was ready to put away the Blue Jays, but the Blue & Gray battled back. Down 14-11, an attacking error by Pou led to Maurer's service for E-town. Three of the next four points were aces by the senior and forced Eastern Mennonite into a timeout as Elizabethtown now led 16-14.

The Royals kept it close, but a serving error by EMU made it 21-19 and with Joey Nelson serving, the Blue Jays were able to get Baxter and Maurer good sets and they punished the Royals for it. EC got level with a 25-19 fourth-set win as a fifth was needed to decide Friday night's winner.

The lead changed several times in the fifth, but four straight from Eastern Mennonite put them ahead as the teams switched sides. Down 12-7 and in a pivotal point of the final set, more unforced errors allowed Elizabethtown to get back into it and eventually grab the lead on consecutive kills by Maurer.

Tied 13-13, Mark Hall came up with a timely kill to put Elizabethtown a point away from the match victory. The Royals returned Maurer's serve, but Hall and Nelson were at the net to block it down for the match point and lift E-town to its first-ever Continental Volleyball Conference win in a five-set thriller.

Baxter finished with a .338 attacking percentage and also had 8 digs. Zieber posted 46 assists, a season-best, along with 11 digs. CVC digs leader, Nelson, had 16 to tie EMU's Drew Bennett for a match-high. Kyle Murray, Hall, Maurer, Orion Lage, and Derek Yenser also added to the team's dig total. Maurer posted 5 service aces.

The Blue Jays are right back at it with a matchup with nationally-ranked Southern Virginia tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. at Thompson Gymnasium.
